Tyra's Garden is a small garden on the island of Resarö situated in the inner part of the archipelago near the small town Vaxholm, outside Stockholm. Tyra's Garden is mostly an ornamental vegetable garden, my potager. But flowers are of course an important ingredience, for beauty and pollination. The climate in these parts is quite demanding as the northerly winds can be strong and cold. THIS BLOG 'Tyra's Garden' is not entirely a gardenblog it contains much more. About me: Enthusiastic amateur gardener and photographer from Vaxholm, Sweden. Designed and built my Greenhouse and Potager in Tyra's Garden 2003. Bad weather...kill some time with Slowbaking....

.....this bread takes two days to make, but it IS worth waiting for. It is from the most southern region of Sweden, Skåne. Rather dark and quite sweet bread made from rye, flavoured with caraway seeds.
Black rye bread, Tyra baking

Tyra baking bread! no...but it is a pretty picture. Today I baked four loafs of this marvellous 'Skånsk Kavring'. I found the recipe in one of my bread books, a very well read book called Landskapsbröd by Karl-Johan Börjesson.

Country Bread is another favorite, a wonderful book that really inspire you to make your own bread. It's by Linda Collister och Anthony Blake. Bread is best baked in wood-fired ovens, using traditional methods to ensure a natural, country taste. That's why I love to bake whenever I'm my country house.

Send me an e-mail if you're interested in the recipe in english.

Squash and Pumpkin Parade

Cucurbita maxima Duchesne 'Blue Hubbard' and 'Marina di Chioggia' are the green ones at the bottom. The yellow/orange one I think really looks like a how pumpkin should look like, it's a Pumpkin Racer F1. The rest are just small one's that I grow purely for decorations.

Blue Hubbard has got this wonderful bright orange flesh, good for cooking.

Brassica - a Favorite in Tyra's Garden and Kitchen

Brassicas are definitely my favorites in Tyra's Garden. This big family adds colour and structure to my potager. All those lovely colours of green: pale, soft, blueish green, purple green etc.

BRASSICAS are highly nutritious full of antioxidants, Sulforaphane exists in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage. Brassicas are really good food and cheap to and if you grow them yourself they are ever cheaper and taste wonderful.

The Big Dig part II. The Roses

The Roses

Done, 39 roses are down ready for the long rest.

Det var verkligen ett slavjobb. Tungt och skitigt rent ut sagt. Längst ner i botten under själva planteringsgropen lade jag stallgödsel, ingen rolig historia, sedan jord, vatten, ros och jord igen kupat upp runt rosen. Hoppas att det blir bra. Jag är ju definitivt novis rosor. Men man lär länge man lever.

The list of the roses in the order they were planted in The Big Dig in groups of three. They are all quite tall and wide and the most important... really fragrant.
  1. Rosa rugosa (white)
  2. Maigold
  3. Rosa rugosa 'Hansa'
  4. Louis Bognet
  5. Lichtkönigin 'Lucia'
  6. Rosa 'Quattre Saison'
  7. Ritausma
  8. Rosa rugosa 'Hansa'
  9. Henry Hudson
  10. Frülungsluft
  11. Stanwell Perpetual
  12. Rosa 'Anna'
  13. John Davis
......and then came the rain, thank you Lord.
Have a great weekend!

The Big Dig

October is absolutely perfect for planting. This is my project "The Big Dig" . I'm going to plant 39 roses. 12 different kind of roses 3 of each except for Rosa Rugosa 'Hansa' that is my husbands favorite so of those I have 6. My plan is that they are going to form a hedge.... hm we will see......and oh YES, look I have a real plan.

This is how they arrived and this is were I order my roses.

Meet Henry! Henry Hudson, he is from Canada.

Mycket frisk sort. Zon 1-7

Stephanotis floribunda - fragrant climber

Stephanotis floribunda
Stephanotis floribunda is a tender, evergreen, twining climber. It requires warm growing conditions and is best suited to greenhouse or conservatory culture. It can grow to about 3 meters and bears beautiful white, waxy, very fragrant flowers.

Stephanotis floribunda will occasionally produce longish, fleshy fruits, particularly during warm summers. The fruit may reach 10cm or more in length and have been described as resembling a small avocado, do not eat them, they are not edible.

This picture of the fruit and seed capsule are from a Stephanotis floribunda, taken in october 2006, Tyra's Garden. Now I have these pretty babies from my Stephanotis mother plant.
Doftranka ifrån Tyras Trädgård planterade tidigt i våras. Tyra's Garden (alien in a pot)

The fruit take several months to ripen, they can be picked and placed in a warm situation to encourage ripening. Once the fruits are fully ripe, they will begin to split and turn brown.
At this stage, the two halves can be pulled apart, to reveal a central mass of flattened seeds, which have a silky plume of white hairs, attached to one end. Store the seeds overwinter in cool, dry, frost-free conditions. I sow them thinly in early spring, cover with compost, in a warm temperature of about 20-24°c .

In - Law Weekend

In -Law Weekend in Umeå.
A lot of fun, food & drink, 'relax' and walks. A visit to Gammlia and the "Egil the tug" museum. The city offers world-class art, drama, films, industries, music and research. It aims to attract more companies, break new construction records and, not least become the European Capital of Culture 2014. Umeå is one of Sweden's fastest growing cities. The average age of the 111 000 people who live in Umeå is 37. They intend to increase their numbers — the goal is to pass the 150 000 figure before 2050.

From the picture above.
A visit to Market Place with all the fruit, veggies and flowers.
Time for some shopping, "Gamla Bettan" got a smart looking coat.
Mr Mechanic, the man with the 'do not touch-sign' doing one of his funny faces. He's a great man with a wonderful sense of humor.
The brothers and sister by the family grave, we lit a candle for grandma and grandpa, Ester and Johannes Nordin and put down some flowers on the grave. After that a jump of joy from Hubbe and Eva - did we say lunchtime?
Down by the river on the boat 'Sjöbris' we enjoyed a coffee in the beautiful September sunshine. The autumn air was clear and fresh, still quite warm, guess it was about 15 degrees and no wind. Perfect day for a walk, so off we went to Gammlia.
A few kilometres from the city centre you find Gammlia, an Outdoor Museum where you can look at all the lovely old buildings and at the same time enjoy the great landscape, there are some stunning views from up there.

At Västerbottens museum we visited 'The family tug'.S/S Egil. a steam tug built in Germany 1914. In may 1924 Grandpa Johannes Nordin became captain on this fine boat.

. Kolla in den här artikeln om Egil
Thank you for a great weekend!
Ps. I had to add some green stuff. Look at this beauty!
