Tyra's Garden is a small garden on the island of Resarö situated in the inner part of the archipelago near the small town Vaxholm, outside Stockholm. Tyra's Garden is mostly an ornamental vegetable garden, my potager. But flowers are of course an important ingredience, for beauty and pollination. The climate in these parts is quite demanding as the northerly winds can be strong and cold. THIS BLOG 'Tyra's Garden' is not entirely a gardenblog it contains much more. Zinnia elegans 'Landreth's Oriole' & Co

Blooming Friday again and the last in the month of March. Outside it is still depressingly cold and still some white stuff on the ground. Blaaa. Indoors however my plants, the small seedlings thrives on the veranda.

Zinnia elegans ’Landreth’s Oriole' is a wonderful heirloom from 18th century. Beautiful orange flowers quite large, double and it reminds me a little of the Dahlia’s flower. I grow all my Zinnias from seed and I start out as early as March. This Zinnia got its name from D. Landreth and this Landreth fellow was quiet a man I will get back to him in another post.

~~~
Zinnia elegans ’Landreths Oriole’ en Kulturarvssort från 1700-talet. Vackert orangegula, stora, dubbla blommor, påminner like om en Dahlia tycker jag. Jag odladen i rabatt och frösår den redan i mars månad. Mannen bakom namnet 'Landreth Oriole' är D. Landreth och honom kommer jag återkomma till i ett annat inlägg.
...
These are the Zinnias I have planted in Tyras Garden 2009
....
...
The Zinnia Whirligig fun, Whirligig I had to look up that word I thought they misspellt it, anyway 'Whirligig fun' will be about 50 cm tall (20 inches), the 'Tropical sun' is a dwarf zinnia will be just 25 cm (10 inches) , the last two 'Old Scabiosa' and 'Landreth's Oriole will be about 70 cm tall (28 inches). I generally prefer the really tall ones as I plant them among all my veggies. The seeds are from Impecta, they have an impressive collection of Zinnias this year and a lot of them are heirlooms.
Epiphyllum the 'Orchid Cactus' - SWAP with me!
This post, 'Epiphyllum the Orchid Cactus' was originally uploaded and written by Tyra at the blog Tyra's Garden http://waxholm.blogspot.com/
Seleniphyllum x cooperi
syn. Epiphyllum crenatum
Family: cactaceae
My Epiphyllum ‘Orchid Cactus’ is an easily cultivated, fast growing epiphyte hybrid. Needs compost containing plenty of humus and sufficient moisture in summer. On the other hand during winter I keep it on limit of starvation and fairly cold 12°C (53,5°F). This together with extra light in the early spring stimulates the budding. Can be grown in semi-shade or full sun. Flowers in late spring or early summer. I actually have them outdoors in flowerboxes and other flower containers all summer long. The Epiphyllum crenatum's natural habitat is south America.
SWAP with me!
I wonder if any of you that got some other Epiphyllum hybrids and would like to exchange cuttings?
Please do write to me posttilltyra@hotmail.com any other varieties, colours would be most appreciated !
History about the Epiphyllum crenatum from wikipedia:
"This species was shown at an exhibition at the Horticultural Society's Garden in 1844 and won highest medal for a new introduction. It had been collected in Honduras 5 years earlier by Georges Ule Skinner and sent to Sir Charles Lemon who flowered it for the first time in 1843. Lindley thought it to have originated in the island of Antigua. E. crenatum is the only species of Epiphyllum that has been used in hybridization to any extent. Most of the colored hybrids have mainly Disocactus genes and perhaps better referred to as Disocactus-hybrids rather than Epiphyllum hybrids."
What is an Epiphyllum? Read more about this remarkable plant here at Epiphyllum.com.
and the Epiphyllum even got it's own society in US! Epiphyllum Society of America
A special thank you to my friend Karin Eklund who gave me cuttings from this great plant some ten years ago. She told me that this orchid cactus has been in her home in Österänge since she was a small girl.
St Patrick's Day and A New Article...
This post, 'St.Patrick's Day - Reportage i Allers Trädgård' was originally uploaded and written by Tyra at the blog Tyra's Garden http://waxholm.blogspot.com/
This is the most green day of the year. If you are interested in some Irish dirt you just have to look at this, Irish Dirt here you can also buy Shamrock seeds. It's amazing!
...
Now my friend it's time for a new piece about my Greenhouse in one of the monthly garden magazines here in Sweden called Allers Trädgård. This time I'm especially anxious to see how it turnes out because I'm the photographer :-) it's not the first time I have had pictures published before but this time it is the whole reportage and that makes it very exciting.
...
Nu mina vänner kommer reportaget i Allers trädgård! Om det är någon som är interesserad av växthuset så kan det väl vara trevligt att se, då får ni kila iväg och köpa Allers Trädgård den 19 mars. De som prenumererar har redan fått den hem i brevlådan. Jag tycker det är extra kul den här gången eftersom att jag har tagit alla foton, det känns jätteroligt. De andra gångerna har jag fått gjort iordning allt och sedan har någon annan kommit och tagit alla bilderna.
...
Have a wonderful Green Day!
The walls are white marble from Rajasthan encrusted with semi-precious stone decorations - cornelian, jasper, lapis lazuli, onyx, and topaz in floral images. More from my visit at Itmad- ud- Daula here
Heirloom patterns - a gift from the past
We have all heard about heirloom seeds and heirloom plant, as I was going through some pictures from India I thought these wonderful botanical patterns are true heirloom patterns – a gift from the past. These fragments of rugs and the wall decoration are from Jaipur and Amber* Fort Rajasthan they have this fantastic floral patterns from the past. The skill of for instance carpet weavers is a typical livelihood passed from one generation to another. The patterns, the art becomes heirloom.
My father, grandfather and uncle as a matter of fact all of the family as far back as I can remember, were carpet weavers before me. I entered the weaving industry at 10 years of age. These word were said by Arthur Mitchum a Brittish weaver b.1862
Horticulture on the floor
I think you can learn both some horticulture and anthropology by just looking and learning from decorations like these. Indoor Gardens on the floor.
This is a collage with fragments from rugs each one of them a wonderful garden.
The weaver girl at her loom
I have just learned that loom is a tool and it dates back to 4400 BC (horizontal loom)
The loom is what in this case the rug is woven on. It consists of a wooden framework with a grid of cotton threads. The cotton becomes the base the foundation of the rug. The “warp” is the cotton that runs vertically on the loom and the “weft” is the one that runs horizontally. The warp and weft together create a grid of cotton on which each strand of wool is tied around.
Time for Sweet Kisses
Spring - the time for Sweet Kisses!
Planting that is, plant the bulbs in well drained soil. Lilium ‘Sweet Kiss’ is an Asian hybrid and has beautiful soft reddish-pink flowers with a mellow yellow centre. Ideal for both pots and borders. These kisses bloom in July in my garden.
Height about 65 cm/ 26 inches
Nu är det vår och tid för ljuva kyssar.
Plantering alltså... Sweet Kisses planterar du nu på våren i väldränerad jord. Lilium ’Sweet Kiss’ har en härligt svags rosaröd blomma med mjukt gul mitt. Den blir cirka 65 cm hög och blommar i juli månad i min trädgård. Du kan även plantera dem i krukor och njuta av lite liljor på uteplatsen, trappen, bryggan eller kanske på balkongen. Som man bäddar får man ligga säjs det ellerhur? Så plantera lite tacksamma liljelökar nu så får du njuta av ljuva kyssar till sommaren.
