Tyra's Garden is a small garden on the island of Resarö situated in the inner part of the archipelago near the small town Vaxholm, outside Stockholm. Tyra's Garden is mostly an ornamental vegetable garden, my potager. But flowers are of course an important ingredience, for beauty and pollination. The climate in these parts is quite demanding as the northerly winds can be strong and cold. THIS BLOG 'Tyra's Garden' is not entirely a gardenblog it contains much more. My Potager on Last day of July

This post 'My Potager on the Last day of July' was originally uploaded by Tyra in the blog Tyra's Garden

Well...Last day of July! I find it a bit sad, A kind of melancholy feeling came over me this morning when I took my usual round in the garden. I'm sad that the summer of 2009 is coming to an end and yet I love this time of the year. Love the dark, warm evenings when you can sit outside and enjoy the calmness of the evening. The water in the sea is also kind of warm (20C) and one can take a late evening swim and float aroun for a bit looking at the stars.

Then last but not least it is harvest time. Here are a few pictures from this morning and they are my contribution to this weeks Blooming Friday, you find more participants here at Katarina.

Dahlia x hostensis ' Tomas Edison' among all my veggies, it is huge this year.

Dahlia x hortensis 'Tomas Edison' named after the great inventor Tomas Alva Edison, you know the one with the light bulb. My Tomas really spreads light in my potager just like a bulb :-)

I wish you all a great blooming weekend!

'Man tager vad man haver' - sa Kajsa Warg

The Day's of Harvest from the Greenhouse and Potager - July

There was a Swedish young woman who wrote a cookery book back in 1755 (amazing!) Her name was Kajsa Warg. She always said and I live by that quote when I'm cooking.

Bild från nätet: Sofies mat

'Man tager vad man haver' - You take what you got

...and then it is up to the brilliant cook to be a wizard and make something delicious out of it.

My gazpacho differs from time to time it all depends on what I got at home but usually I have; tomatoes, red peppers, onions, cucumber, garlic, stale bread, ice cold water, oil and vinegar. Salt, spices and herb of course. About half (60%) of the ingredients I blend and make into a nice soup and the rest I dice into small dices which I serve (on the side) together with croutons with the soup.

Here is a Spanish Recipe of

Gazpacho

this delicious soup from Andalucia Españia

Ingredientes para 5 personas:
1 kg de tomate rojo maduro
70 g pepino
60 g pimiento rojo
1/2 diente de ajo tamaño normal
30 g cebolla
1 cucharada rasa de sal (a gusto)
vinagre de jerez (2 cucharadas)
agua (3 vasos)
100 g aceite de oliva virgen extra (7 cucharadas)
pan duro
comino molido (una pizca)

Blooms and Harvest in Tyra's Garden - July

I don't think I have really looked properly at the flower of the Blackberry bush before but this morning I did and to my surprice I found that they in fact very beautiful.

and for this weeks Blooming Friday a bouquet of a slighty different kind...

a bouquet of carrots

Daucus carota, Yummie food for Peter Rabbit and hungry gardener. This year I grow both the ordinary yellow carrots and then I found a dark red variety as well. It is very pretty when you slice it into a mixed sallad because it is orange/yellow in the middle.

I wish you all a great weekend

Happy gardening!/ TYRA

A Beauty or A Beast?
...
Well they say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder,
this TOMATO 'Cherokee Purple' grown from seed is of course kind of beautiful in my eyes... but I must admit as they said about Whoopi Goldberg in Color Purple.
...
- You sure 'is' ugly!
...

This tomato weighs a massive 506 gram and that is about 17,85 ounces!

I started out with this fellow in February, read about how it all started here

Zinnia elegans 'Whirligig fun'

This post, 'Zinnia elegans 'whirligig fun' was originally uploaded and written by Tyra at the blog Tyra's Garden http://waxholm.blogspot.com/

Blooming friday at Katarina's Roses and stuff - Katarina askes "Have you anything in your garden that pleases you extra much? - Please write and tell us about it "

Well Katarina it must be the Zinnia elegans.

I haven’t got many of my favourite flowers(Zinnia) in my garden this year unfortunatly, something accidently happened….I killed my seedling! However here I have one gorgeous Zinnia elegans ‘Whirligig fun’ that survived the massacre.

July in Tyra's Garden - Juli i Tyras Trädgård

Collage 'July'

I wish you all a lovely weekend.

I'm gonna weigh anchor and go sailing for a few days...

"Navigare necesse est"

This post, 'Navigare Necesse Est' was originally uploaded and written by Tyra at the blog Tyra's Garden http://waxholm.blogspot.com/

"Navigare necesse est" even for a gardener.

I adore and love my garden, but if you have the great benefit of living in the archipelago of Stockholm (with some 20.000 islands and rocky islets), you just have to hop on board and go sailing even if you are a deep-rooted gardener. However before I go on board I take a round in my potager and bring loads of stuff with me.

We have a full kitchen on board the boat and cooking at sea is great fun and the food tastes so good after a days sailing. I bring a lot of fresh food with me and vegetables, herbs and spices from the garden, the tomatoes are not ready yet but I guess I can start harvest in a week or two.

Det är ju så att man slits mellan hav och land så här års, det är ju så fantastiskt underbart att få segla ute i skärgården c:a 20 000 kobbar och skär att njuta av! Om det inte fanns polska intensiva lågtryck så hade det varit perfekt! Ellerhur? 32mm regn på en timme...
