Last day of december and 2010...I just would like to thank all of you wonderful blogging garden-friends for a fantastic year. I also wish you a great, prosperous and Happy New Year!

 This is a favourite in our home, it is a Danish (Scandinavian) Kransekage. This Kransekage is often served during Christmas, New Year and Weddings. It is an almond paste cake - the only ingredients are Almond paste, egg-whites and icing sugar for the decoration.

This is from yesterdays walk through the little village Åkerby. What a wonderful winter day, the sun was shining and the snow was glittering and it was just a perfect Sunday afternoon. All the little red houses brightened up the otherwise fairly black and white landscape. This is where I have my little red cottage, my "summerhouse", Åkerby is a very old village, I don't know how old but I know that the Russians burnt most of it down in 1917 during the so called "rysshärjningarna" Russian ravages. The clocktower in Åkerby is from 1739 and my little red house is from 1901.

Today we celebrate The Day of Saint Lucia   (Saint Lucy's Day wikipedia) a lovely day in Advent. A day with filled with glorious music, lots of candlelights, saffron bread and of course Lucia.

Savoy Cabbage

I actually bought a Savoy cabbage last week just because it was so beautiful. Now I have it outside on a table just outside my door on the porch. Just as a decor. As I looked at my winter decoration the other day I wondered why is it called “Savoy” cabbage?

 Well now I know it is name from a place in France - Savoie, ta-daa

But…

You see the French on the other hand, call it Chou de Milan or Chou de Savoia. They says it is a very ancient cabbage from Milan and that is why they call it Chou de Milan…ta-daa

But…

You see the Italians call it Cavolo di Savoia or Cavolo di Milano

Confused?

Savoia or Milan… well, it is same, same but different, they are practically next door to each other.

Carl von Linné named it Brassica oleracea var. sabauda and Sabauda is on the very road between… yeah that’s right Milan and Savoie. Clever man.

My Savoy Cabbage in now totally deep frozen and it will be beautiful for many more days to come and now when I pass by it I know - Savoie, Sabauda, Milan...

I love all kinds of cabbages. It is such a versatile vegetable, so handy to use in the kitchen; you can make so many wonderful dishes with cabbage. And it is sooo good for you.

Great minds think alike ;-) I know my friend Randi Måhl think of this Savoy cabbage as a decoration too, she even put it in a vase. Just beautiful
