Flax - Linum usitatissimum - Lin

A few years ago we in our village, Engarn, grow flax in the field just below my house where I live. It was so very beautiful, the entire field was covered with the pale blue small flax flowers. I wish they would grow more of this remarkable plant.

Flax is an erect annual plant growing to 1.2 m tall, with slender stems. The leaves are glaucous green, slender lanceolate, 20–40 mm long and 3 mm broad. The flowers are pure pale blue, 15–25 mm diameter, with five petals; they can also be bright red. The fruit is a round, dry capsule 5–9 mm diameter, containing several glossy brown seeds.

The Botanical Garden of Uppsala

On our way to our ‘summerhouse’ we decided to stop at The Botanical Garden in Uppsala . Uppsala is halfway and perfect for a quick stop. Do some shopping, have lunch or do something more interesting like this time a visit to a botanical garden. Miss M and I chose to have coffee first at a very nice Café called ‘Fågelsången’. The sun was shining from a crystal clear September sky so we were able to sit outside and enjoy our coffee and cake, watching all the people passing by. Next stop was the Botanical Garden in Uppsala. We were very glad to find out that there was an exhibition 'Harvest at Botan' in the Orangery of Linneanum.

In 1807, in memory of the 100th. anniversary of Linnaeus' birth the Linneanum was ready for inauguration. .

The exhibition was fantastic all those wonderful veggies! A lot of them I've never even heard of. Tomatoes in all colours and shapes. This particular 'Carson' looks great, nice colours and healthy, I have to get some seeds next year and try it out.
Fantastiskt trevlig dag blev det i Uppsala med både konditoribesök och besök i den fina bötaniska trädgården. Nu är vi på landet och skördar lite äpplen och plommon. Plommonen var inte många men det kompenserades av att de blev extra stora och vackra i år.

Vår store botaniker Carl von Linné skulle fyllt 300 år i dag.

He grew up in Stenbrohult, moved to Uppsala where he married Sara and got a lot of children. 5 of them reached adulthood. Carl von Linné was born Carolus Linnaeus and was raised to nobility in 1757.

Just 1,54 m tall but still huge. One of the worlds greatest scientist. Born in 1707 in Råshult as son of a priest. He grew up in Stenbrohult, moved to Uppsala where he married Sara and got a lot of children. 5 of them reached adulthood. Carl von Linné was born Carolus Linnaeus and was raised to nobility in 1757.

2007 we celebrate the 300th anniversary of this remarkable man. Carolus Linnaeus was a zoologist, botanist and physician.

In 1735 he published SYSTEMA NATVRAE just eleven pages long but the 10th edition of this publication Systema Naturae contained classification over 4400 spieces of animals and 7700 of plants.

In the university town of Uppsala (the Uni. was founded 1477 by the way) you find, close to the university grounds, the Botanical Garden (350 years old). In Uppsala you also find the Linné Garden that was founded in 1655 by Olof Rudbeck, actually before Carl von Linné was born. In 1741 Carl von Linné took over the administration and built the orangerie in french style designed by Carl Hårleman. Today this remarkable garden is a reconstruction of how it looked during the Carl von Linné era.

I år firar vi Carl von Linné född 23 maj 1707.
Linné blev 70 år gammal, ligger begravd i Uppsala.
