It says it is 'reblogged'. What the heck does that mean? That is a bad thing I am thinking and I hope you get it worked out.

Hi Tyra, I see there is a whole list of other's blogs that they are publishing. Unfortunately it is common practice. The first time it was brought to my attention I was very upset. Now I know there is nothing you can do other than contact them and ask them to remove it. I try and not think about it. It seems like a bloglist of some kind and not an individual copying work work, it is commonly done, I'm afraid.

Oh how annoying Tyra. It's sickening isn't it. That blog looks like a typical site that's using your work to drive traffic to it and gain from all the advertisement links they have on there. I see it's a Word Press site - it may be worth having a look at their complaints process to see if they can help you? That's if you don't get any joy from politely asking the site owners to stop first.

Men oj då??!! Hur fräck får man vara? Hur upptäckte du detta? Vad kan man göra åt saken?
Jag beklagar verkligen att du råkat ut så där!

Hi Tyra!

One can always find out who is the registrant of a domain for example: at http://whois.net. I find this information about the registrant of the this side! It's a crime against copyrightlaw so do contact him or her!

Thanks for the heads up Tyra! It's a shame that they are doing this.

How terrible to see your work copied like this! So this is what they mean by 'reblogging'?! I hope this can be sorted out soon.

It infuriates me that people don't have minds of their own and want to profit from someone else's site/work. I haven't been blogging long enough to know the "ins" and "outs" of what's legal but Frances is probably right. I know I regularly have someone stealing images from my blog which is why I purposely resize them, copyright them, etc. It is still pretty sad and maddening tho.

Hej Tyra! Verkligen medaljens baksida i denna transparenta cybervärld!!! Fräckt som 1000an.
Jag såg att din blogg fanns med på DN.BOSTAD+ i dag. GRATTIS. Kram Eva Linnea

I would try to go to Wordpress about it. I'm not sure how that process works, but Wordpress are the ones who could delete the "blog" if they were convinced it was plagiarism.

Mr. Brown Thumb has written about this before. You may find some useful ideas there.

A few bloggers precede each post with a basic identification, along the lines of, "This post was written by ________ at the blog _________. If you are not reading it at _________, then this content was stolen without permission." Since most of the sites that steal content like this do so by posting whatever they get from feeds, the preface will go up along with the rest of your post. You can also shorten your feed to one paragraph or 255 characters long, whichever is shorter, through Blogger (Blogger Dashboard --> Settings --> Site Feed) which will at least give the feed scrapers incomplete content and make stealing from you less worthwhile.

If you shorten the feed and preface everything, then you're really not worth scraping, because no feed scraper is going to display posts of "This post was written by ______, etc." over and over again.

Finally, a long series of posts about what horrible people silite.com are and how much you hope for them to be [action] in the [body part] with a [sharp implement] will either get their attention and make them stop, or give you a way to talk past them to their readers, if they have readers.

I know all of those options sound like work. Sorry. But the last one might also be fun, if you're that kind of person.

Good grief! Thanks for heads up, Tyra ... I see many of our posts there ;(

I agree with Mr. Subjunctive -- I think Wordpress might be interested to know what some blogger is using their WP account for. They could, indeed, yank the site.

Disgraceful, to steal the words, the pictures, the work of others! There must be something that can be done about it?

Tyra I have emailed you regarding this issue.

Oh no, this is not good at all :( I recognise posts from some of my other blogging friends too. I hope there is some way for you to get your content off of their site.

Nancy said...

This would be a dirty trick against them, and I'm not even sure it would work 100%.... BUT.

Google ads will be pulled and they will be banned from having them if Google notices a pattern where, at least one or more visitor just clicks on every ad and then back and forth.

No ad revenue, no blog scraping?

Yolanda Elizabet Heuzen said...

Not again!!!! This has been happening to me several times so I know what a shock it must be for you. Tyra. Mr Brown Thumb gives good advice. When it happened to me I complained about it (via e-mail) and once they finally understood that what they were doing was stealing, my content was removed from their sites. BTW just visited thier site and their archives are down. The post they have up now is gobbledegook. So something is going on.

It looks like you've gotten some good advice here, and it looks like, as Yolanda said, something is happening there. I hope this is resolved properly.

Thank you for alerting us to this.

It seems to be a very odd blog. It's not interesting and it doesn't make sense.

People may go there once, but they're hardly likely to return (I wouldn't have thought) - and if it's your blog a prospective reader wants, it so obviously isn't what they are looking for(!) they'll look more till they find it.

Obviously everything that could be said has been said. If it were me, and that is not too likely because my pictures are not good and my prose is very specific to my topic, I would link to them and run a constant bash. Every post would contain a link degrading what they do, soon they will leave me alone.

They won't copy anything that degrades their site. Start each post with, "for those of you who know me, you know what $%^&*(*%$@ www.silite.com is, and this is what they are up to today... say a bit, then do your regular post, which your readers will skip to and enjoy, It might slow them down a bit.

Anonymous said...

Yes, very annoying. They are just trying to make money off advertising.

I would recommend shortening the RSS feed, and contacting Wordpress, Google, and any other advertisers they use.

Thank you again for all the very helpful comment. I've learn a lot.
You have all been great thank you /Big hug Tyra

Oh, I like the suggestions made my Alan and by Mr. Subjunctive! They turn the scrapers' weapons against them. But to be really effective, a lot of the bloggers who are being had should get involved. Hmmm.

Hi Tyra - I've had a similar experience to you today with a different site. I've contacted them via their site's feedback and asked them to stop. I've had a very prompt response saying they do credit my articles and I should benefit from traffic from their website! Let's just say that one of the so-called links back to me isn't even clickable on and the other is buried under the properties of the article name, I don't think I'll be getting that much traffic from them do you? However, they have offered to remove my feed's address from the >10,000 they're using, so fingers crossed they do so! I hope you get a similar result with your site skimmer and soon.

I can send you the content of my correspondence with them if that's any help.

Hugs

Gulp. Luddites that we are, we don't even know how to put up copyright protection symbols on outr site. Our only hope is that our posts are so idiosyncratic that no one would WANT to steal our content! And since we have no photos---we've stumbled on sites before with quite lively discussions about blandly using photos stolen from others' blogs---at least we're safe from that. We're actually more worried about students copying our historical posts and trying to pass them off to teachers and professors as original essays, but we hope said teachers and professors would recognize that the voice is somehow wrong. Still, it's a real worry for all bloggers, and I'm sorry you've had such a discouraging experience!

VP said...

Hurrah - the site I've had a problem have have removed my feed. So contacting them by email can work :)

I'm not sure what impact shortening your feed would have on sites like Blotanical and Google Reader, where you DO want people to see the whole thing. Can anyone else offer an insight on this?

I've just been looking at this:-

http://www.feedage.com/feeds/2563998/pictures-just-pictures

In effect, the pictures from my blog one after another. (You just have to scroll down the page a little to get to them.)

And since my blog is nothing but pictures - well, it's my blog!

(Very flattered!)

I clicked on the site's privacy policy. It says in no way can it be held responsible if I have in any way infringed anyone's copyright.

Well, that's an interesting approach!

Oh. Sorry. I meant the copyright section and I think I misunderstood it. I think they are meaning they can't be held responsible if anyone else infringes the copyright.

Humm!

For future reference, there are legal actions you can take to prevent this sort of copyright infringement, and thankfully, often you can do all the work yourself (so it won't cost you anything but your time).

First, contact the copyright infringer and ask them nicely to take down your content.

If that doesn't work, then you can contact their blog host (for example, Wordpress or Blogger) or the company hosting the website (you can find this info out by doing a "Who is" search) and follow their requirements for filing what is called a DMCA complaint. If they agree that your content has been illegally copied, they will remove it from their servers (i.e. delete it). You can also file a DMCA complain with Google to have them removed from Google's index of websites, and if they use ads on their website, you can file a complaint with Google's AdSense division.
