Fragrant and Tasty

 October in the Greenhouse

Geraniums, Elberberries, Winters quashes and Lavender

The growing season for 2010 is almost over and I've cleaned out the greenhouse. Gone are all the tomatoes and most of the chilies too. I have dug up some parsley, tarragon and chives and planted them in pots and brought them into the greenhouse so I can enjoy them a bit longer. Today I harvested the last of the Lavender Lavandula augustifolia and I haven't ever seen them so bright in the colour. If you like the Elderberries Sambucus nigra now it’s a good time to pick them just as the frost has arrived and before the birds eat them. I’m actually going to give them to the birds this year but I'll give my Elderberry harvest to the birds I have outside my kitchen window, then I can watch them eat and that is always enjoyable.

Don't be a stranger my friend I would just love to hear from you!

Elderberries, how pretty, and delicious. They aren't very common around here. Your green house looks so inviting!

All your pictures are just beautiful, as well as your greenhouse. Lovely harvest.

I love elderberry/apple jelly. My mom used to make it all the time. It grows wild certain parts of our state and I need to keep an eye out for a nice stand so I can harvest some in season. Love your photos.

Gorgeous greenhouse! I also like the woven fence behind you in that photo on the side.

It is interesting to me that you have lavender and sambuca right now. For me in southern California lavender stopped blooming back in july and our local elderberry, Sambuca mexicana was also fruiting back then. Your plants finish their growing cycle because of cold, mine due to drought.

Wow Tyra those elderberries are beautiful. I wish I had a spot close by that I could pick them and use them in cooking. I often see them bloom in June but have never been close enough to get them to pick in the fall. They look good and I know the birds will enjoy them tremendously.

On the nandina, I don't have any with berries in my garden. That one picture was taken in Nashville. They are hardy to Zone 6 would they grow in your garden?

I've never had lavender bloom in the fall for me. Yours is lovely. It is so sad though when you put the garden to bed.

Your collage is beautiful, Tyra.
Elderberries grow wild around our farm and the berries are mostly gone now...eaten by the birds. I have made the juice and frozen it to make elderberry/apple jelly when I have more time for the kitchen.
The pale pink geranium is so pretty and lavender is always wonderful. I haven't had success overwintering it yet, but I continue to try.
Happy autumn to you!
