Tyra's Garden is a small garden on the island of Resarö situated in the inner part of the archipelago near the small town Vaxholm, outside Stockholm. Tyra's Garden is mostly an ornamental vegetable garden, my potager. But flowers are of course an important ingredience, for beauty and pollination. The climate in these parts is quite demanding as the northerly winds can be strong and cold. THIS BLOG 'Tyra's Garden' is not entirely a gardenblog it contains much more. About me: Enthusiastic amateur gardener and photographer from Vaxholm, Sweden. Designed and built my Greenhouse and Potager in Tyra's Garden 2003. Tropaeolum majus - Nasturtium

This post 'Tropaeolum majus - Nasturtium' was originally uploaded in Tyra's blog 4 Garden Geeks Tyras Trädgård/Tyra's Garden

Today's Flower is my watercolour painting of a Nasturtium that I made today.

A very useful plant it is both beautiful as well as an excellent trap crop in my potager.

"Nasturtiums are also considered widely useful companion plants. They repel a great many cucurbit pests, like squash bugs, cucumber beetles, and several caterpillars. They have a similar range of benefits for brassica plants, especially broccoli and cauliflower. They also attract black fly aphids, and are sometimes planted in the hope of saving crops susceptible to them (as a trap crop). They may also attract beneficial predatory insects" wikipedia

Slug Free Garden - No Pests Whatsoever!

This post 'Slug Free Garden - No Pests What So Ever' was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius-Lindhe in the blog Tyras Trädgård/ Tyra's Garden

At breakfast this morning I was thinking…yet another day of hibernation. Nothing much to do, garden-wise that is. I do of course have to tend to my small babies on the veranda, the tomato, chili and artichoke plants. And I must tell you, they are all doing fine.

As I sat there thinking about these quite dull and boring week in February and March when I’m still ‘hibernating’,just trying my best to stay warm and happy. Anyway... some very positive thoughts pop up. I said to myself.

– Tyra, think of this!

This is the time when you don’t have to fight the forever going war with slugs – think of it and enjoy a slug free garden!

And there is more…

No Ixodes scapularis, deer ticks

and…

No mosquitoes

Rather pleasant isn’t it!

I'll keep this picture small in size, it is too scary...

It really is like the Monty Pythons said

Cydonia oblonga - Quince Marmalade

This post 'Cydonia oblonga - Quince marmalade' was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius Lindhe in the blog

Some argue that the Quince was the 'apple' Eve got in the paradise, could it be possible ?

Some people say it was. It is a very exciting fruit with an exceptional and exotic fragrance and taste. Stunningly beautiful and very photogenic too, don’t you think. I wish to get a plant into my jardin de potager this year, maybe I can get hold of one here in Sweden, otherwise I just have to go and abroad to get one. (Wishful thinking)

You can see how the flower of the Quince looks like here in another post about Quince, Cydonia oblonga

~ ~ ~

Today's Winter Picture

This  picture was taken this Sunday, it was the day after the big storm, the sun was shining and it was so beautiful.

 However...

Despite the beauty of all the sunny winter days I’m fed up with it!

I really do want the spring to come! Old man winter still got a firm grip, he just won't let go... As I'm writing this post the thermometer says -12,6! (10 Farhenheit) Now that is COLD Bbrrrr, the sky is clear and I can see the stars from my window so I guess the temperature will fall even more during the night.

Today is Valentine's Day and this is the day I start with all my seedlings. I have now planted tomatoes, aubergine, artichokes and chilipeppers, you can read more about that tomorrow in The Greenhouse and Köksträdgården (The Kitchen garden) Perhaps it seems a bit early but these four they do take a long time from seed to harvest.

Happy Valentine to You All!

From Seed to Bloom Clematis Gladys Picard

How to grow Clematis from seed.

I got some useful tips and ideas here from Mr.Greenthumb

I  also learnt that I will probably not get a Gladys, I will get something else. But still, I will have a go and see what I’ll end up with in the end.

This will be interesting…to be continued

Här hittade jag en svensk länk till Allt om trädgårdsforum om hur man kan göra. Här är den.
