After a few days in bed with a flu I'm bored...my fever is down, not gone but down and I just have to take a stroll in the garden. I can see all the wonderful Rhododendrons, Irises and the Papaver Orientale from the window but I just have to go out and enjoy them 'live' and the tomatoes need my attention...or perhaps it's just that I miss my 'friends' in the greenhouse. The sun is shining and just got to get out, what do you say? A bit of fresh air can't harm anyone can it?

Wisteria - I'm thinking...Italy

The Wisteria sinensis is in full bloom in my garden now and every time I see it or smell it's most wonderful scent I think of the gorgeous Amalfi coast and Positano in particular.

It really thrives in my poor soil next to the drainpipe at my garage, the spot is very sunny and it is welldrained. The only thing I give it is some (chicken) manure in early spring.

Back to Italy again...

As I said, I'm thinking of Italy..."Enchanted April", do you remember that lovely movie from 1992 starring Miranda Richardsson and Josie Lawrence?

"Wisteria sinensis (Chinese Wisteria) is a woody, deciduous, perennial climbing vine in the genus Wisteria, native to China in the provinces of Guangxi, Guizhou, Hebei, Henan, Hubei, Shaanxi, and Yunnan. While this plant is a climbing vine, it can be trained into a tree-like shape, usually with a wavy trunk and a flattened top.

It can grow 20-30 m long over supporting trees by counter-clockwise-twining stems. The leaves are shiny, green, pinnately compound, 10-30 cm in length, with 9-13 oblong leaflets that are each 2-6 cm long. The flowers are white, violet, or blue, produced on 15-20 cm racemes in spring, usually reaching their peak in mid-May. The flowers on each raceme open simultaneously before the foliage has expanded, and have a distinctive fragrance similar to that of grapes. Though it has shorter racemes than Wisteria floribunda (Japanese Wisteria), it often has a higher quantity of racemes. The fruit is a flattened, brown, velvety, bean-like pod 5-10 cm long with thick disk-like seeds around 1 cm in diameter spaced evenly inside; they mature in summer and crack and twist open to release the seeds; the empty pods often persist until winter. However seed production is often low, and most regenerative growth occurs through layering and suckering. One very interesting fact about this plant is that it is actually a member of the pea family, and the abovementioned seedpods are actually legumes.

It is hardy in USDA plant hardiness zones 5-9, and prefers moist soils. It is considered shade tolerant, but will flower only when exposed to partial or full sun. It will also flower only after passing from juvenile to adult stage, a transition that may take many years. It can live for over 100 years.

*All parts of the plant contain a glycoside called wisterin which is toxic if ingested and may cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pains, and diarrhea. Wisterias have caused poisoning in children of many countries, producing mild to severe gastroenteritis.

Blossom and blooms in my garden just now. Thousands of tiny blossoms of plum, apple, pear, cherry and crabapple adds splendour to my garden now in this glourious month of May.

Meet Claus Dalby’s fantastic garden, that I call a ’Whiter shade of pale’ garden. This man can really paint with his plants, though his spring garden is almost monochrome it is truely amazing, so very beautiful. Claus found all these wonderful plants and composed them into a crème coloured symphony for his spring garden.

Up up and away...

The gherkins are coming along fine in the greenhouse, it is really fascinating to see them grow, they cling on to almost everything or anything. The tomatoes are getting quite tall as well. I had too many plants this year again :-) ... so I have been giving away a lot of tomatoes to friends and neighbours.

Outside the potager I have tulips, both old faithful friends and new acquaintances, these are new, I think they are very cute. Especially from above. I did save the label with the name but I cannot find it right now...silly girl.

When I was out earlier tonight it was actually snowing white petals from the cherry blossoms.

Faithful Old Friends in the Garden

Faithful Old Friends.

These old tulips appear here and there in my garden, I havn’t planted then so I don’t know their name unfortunately. They are simple to their shape but very graceful and strong, rather tall too. They must be at least 16 years old and each year they pay me a lovely visit.
The new tulips however they seem to disappear after a few years, do you have the same ‘ problem’?

Highgate Cemetery

Today I'm going to show you some pictures from my visit to this amazing place called Highgate Cemetery, just about one hour from the City of London's hectic pulse. I'm a huge fan and admirer of this enchanted spot on earth. It lush, green, so very beautiful and calm.

The family Tomb of Samuel Whitfield.

The cemetery's grounds are full of mature trees, shrubbery and wild flowers all of which have been planted and grown without human influence. ( I don't think that is completely true) I found a numerous wild flowers like for instance Bluebells Scilla non-scripta and Ramsons Allium ursinum. The guide told me that in a few weeks the wild poppies Papaver will bloom and can you imagine the red 'lanterns' lighten up the grounds. It must be wonderful. The grounds are a haven for birds and small animal. The cemeterys tree crowns form a wonderful most amazing canopy and the sound in the cemetery or the lack of noice is overwhelming.

The Highgate cemetery is devided into two parts the West and the East Cemetery. All my pictures here are from the West Cemetery. This Victorian Cemetery was opened in 1839. The initial design was by the architect Stephen Geary.

'Although its most famous occupant in the east cemetery is probably Karl Marx (whose tomb's attempted bombing in 1970 is still recalled by some Highgate residents), there are many other prominent figures, Victorian and otherwise, buried at Highgate Cemetery.' Facts from Wikipedia read more here

East Cemetery

Open from 10.00am weekdays, 11.00am weekends. There is no charge for children under the age of 16 when accompanied by an adult.

East Cemetery Tours

There is a guided tour of the East Cemetery once a month, on the first Saturday of each month. Tours are about one hour in length, and are limited to 15 people. Tickets are sold at the East Cemetery gate on the day of the tour on a first come, first served basis. The tour cost of £5 includes entrance to the East Cemetery. People should gather at 2:15 P.M. for a prompt start at 2:30.

Western Cemetery

Admission to the West Cemetery is by guided tour only. We have tours all year.

London my Metropolis

I’m back from London, my favourite Metropolis.

I didn’t know and I actually just found out that London was in fact called Metropolis during the Victorian era. During this much to short visit to London my only ambition tourist-wise was to visit the famous (Victorian) Highgate Cemetery and I will give you a post about this fantastic place in a post shortly.

Today I’m going to show you some pictures from an old and absolutely wonderful store called Fortnum & Mason. They have a lot of stuff even some lovely things for the garden, to posh for my taste. This time I want to share some other hilarious bits and pieces with you or what do you think about this Coffee and Tea set.

Everything is expensive in this store but the quality is exquisite! Thank God that I just had a small suitcase otherwise I would have been ruined. Though I was able to squeeze in a few beautiful tins with delicious biscuits.

This is my favourite department....the Confectionary department.

It is a feast for the eye to see all those lovely Chocolates - Cakes and Bisquits - Sweets - Marmalades & Preserves.

One of the days we were out walking for more than 14 hours! Of course we stopped for coffee, snacks & beer, lunch, coffee again and supper :-) but still... we were very glad to find this bench. Isn't it just beautiful? Very comfortable too, I loved it so much that I looked it up up and it is from Gaze Burvill in UK and it is called Court Seat (cute name)

I saved the best to the last, finally a flower. Wisteria
