Tyra's Garden is a small garden on the island of Resarö situated in the inner part of the archipelago near the small town Vaxholm, outside Stockholm. Tyra's Garden is mostly an ornamental vegetable garden, my potager. But flowers are of course an important ingredience, for beauty and pollination. The climate in these parts is quite demanding as the northerly winds can be strong and cold. THIS BLOG 'Tyra's Garden' is not entirely a gardenblog it contains much more. GBBD - November in Tyra's Garden

This post 'GBBD- November' was originally uploaded by Tyra in the blog Tyra's Garden

GBBD - November

The flowers are getting hard to find these days, after several night with frost where are just some very brave roses that are still in bloom outside, the 'Lucia' and the explorer from Canada 'John Davis'. In the greenhouse I have more flowering blooms and even a gigantic chili plant, however the fruits are still green but I hope they will turn to the colour of red for Christmas that would be appropriate.

Pansy Violaceae in the greenhouse

the last rose...

Just a few treasures still flowering in my garden and greenhouse on this November GBBD. You find more GBBD posts from all over the world if you visit Carol at May Dream Gardens

Soothing remedy for coughs and colds

This post 'Once up on a Thyme' was originally uploaded by Tyra in the blog Tyra's Garden

Once up on a Thyme...

...I walked on a path lined with of thymes and sensed the marvellous amoratic leaves and I fell in love...
I just adore the fragrance and taste of this herb. It is a favourite both in the potager as well as in the kitchen. I even make a cough medicine with Thymus vulgaris in it, see recipe for Tyra's remedy intended for coughs and colds below but first some pictures.

Woolly thyme —the wooliest of all thymes, forms a thick ground-covering mat of tiny, densely hairy grayish green leaves. The foliage has subtle fragrance and is not the best thyme for culinary use nor for my remedy. In June-July the pretty tiny pink tubular flowers appears. Plants grow to only about 5 cm or so in height. Woolly thyme thrives in dry, well-drained neutral to alkaline soil in full sun. Walks, rock gardens, stone walls, and pond borders (if dry) are all excellent habitats from the creeping of the lovely Thymus pseudolanuginosus. This thyme spills gracefully over stone walls and can be grown between stone pavers. To propagate, divide the plants in spring or autumn, or sow seed in early spring.

Thymus vulgaris Garden Thyme,
Thymus x citriodorus Lemon Thyme
and Orange fragrant Thyme Thymus fragantissiumus

are in my belief the best for culinary use. For medical use take the Thymus vulgaris.

Now for the recipe...

Tyra's soothing remedy for coughs and colds

Make a strong infusion of thyme, elderberry flowers and sage (let it cool) add lemon and a generous amount of honey and for adults 1/3 part of gin or congac. Drink small amount of this mixture several times per day, it is really soothing.

For a cold it is beneficent to add fresh ginger, chili and/or garlic as well.

Susie on Gotland says "Here on Gotland the wild thyme growns in the meadows by the sea and it's so nice to go there late in the summer evenings as the sun set - and so on top of that sense the smell of crushed thyme. Wonderful! Oh, how I long for next year!"

Underbart! Oj, vad jag längtar till nästa år!! "

Take care - LOLove/ Tyra

Starflower - Trientalis europaea - Skogsstjärna

This post 'STARFLOWER' was originally uploaded by Tyra in the blog Tyra's Garden

Artic Starflower the small and delicate beauty from the wood.

Oops...I bit late with the blooming Friday post but here are some picture from a walk in the big old forest.

...
Starflower - Skogsstjärna in swedish is the same as Moonshine in english I mean the common term for home-distilled alcohol, especially in places where this practice is illegal. Just some unnecessery knowledge :-)

~~~
Arctic Starflower Trientalis europaea is a plant in the Primulaceae family, called by the common name chickweed wintergreen or Arctic starflower. It is a small herbaceous perennial plant with one or more whorls of obovate leaves. The leaves take on a copper hue in late summer. The solitary white flowers (1-2 cm diameter, usually with 6-8 petals) appear in midsummer. Trientalis europaea occurs throughout boreal regions of Europe and Asia, but is largely replaced by Trientalis borealis in correponding habitats in North America. Wikipedia
It is Blooming Friday and Katarina our host have a post about seed and seedheads.
Have a great weekend
Garden Bloggers' Blooms Day - Potager & Greenhouse
This post 'Garden Bloggers' Blooms Day - Potager & Greenhouse' was originally uploaded by Tyra in the blog Tyra's Garden
...
October started out with harsh winds and some tough cold days with frost at night. It is slowing down in the garden, the harvest is thinning out although I still find some late 'treasures' in the potager. It's Garden Bloggers Bloom Day once again and thanks to Carol of May Dreams Gardens, we get to see all the lovely in gardens around the world and what is 'in floribus' just now, fascinating isn't it.
John Davies
One of the last roses...I think, you never know
Auricula
This Auricula is generally a spring flower, but this Primula auricula one just wanted to get some fresh autumn air.
Geramiums in the greenhouse
The Cichorium has been 'in floribus' in my potager since June
Gerbera in the greenhouse, I think a wonderful splash of colour ...
Kaprifol
This Honeysuckle is a cutting I took from the mother plant in July and it spreads a wonderful fragance in the greenhouse at the moment.
Here comes the sun tadadada... (I'm singing the Beatles song) Calendula officinalis is another 'sun' in the potager, self sown, I like that, here in good company with the parsley.
and the last picture is of my monk in the potager 'Franciscus cupani'
That's all folks!
Wild Sweet Pea from Sicily
This post 'Wild Sweet Pea from Sicily' was originally uploaded by Tyra in the blog Tyra's Garden
Sicilian Wild Sweet Pea , Heirloom
Lathyrus odoratus "Franciscus Cupani"
An old heritage variety from 1699, scattered with medium sized flowers in violet and purple. Absolutely wonderful fragrance. In this northern climate we sow the seeds in March-June, it takes 10-30 days to germinate, blooms from June to the first frost, 5 feet tall. Likes a sunny position of course when bearing in mind where it comes from.
Chiltern Seeds "Rather surprisingly, for such a well-known flower, the origins of Lathyrus odoratus are shrouded in mystery and its country of origin is not known. The flower was first introduced into this country (UK) from Sicily in 1699 where wild specimens have also been collected relatively recently. In addition, similar plants have been collected in South America, but all these are suspected of being garden escapes. From these “original” plants were developed what were known as the grandiflora but are now generally called the Old-Fashioned Sweet Peas."
Siciliansk Vildluktärt (kulturarv)
Lathyrus odoratus "Franciscus Cupani"
Ett årig kulturarvssort från 1699 (?) den är nog betydligt äldre men den importerades till England då. Plantan översållas av halvstora blommor i violett och purpur. Fullkomligt underbar doft.
Så den i Mars-Juni, det tar 10-30 dagar att gro, Blommar Juni till och enda till det att frosten tar den, gillar soligt läge förstås (sicilien ) blir omkring 150 cm hög. Du kan finna frö hos Impecta.
It is Blooming Friday and Katarina askes What is the favourite in your garden now? Katarina shows us some of her lovely roses.
My favourite is a 'monk'
'Kanelbullens' Day 2009
Hip hip hurrah! För denna underbara lilla bulle.
We celebrate Kanelbullens dag here in Sweden.
One of our favourite traditional bread is a small bun called Kanelbulle, Cinnamon roll or Cinnamon bun in english and today it is a special day just for this bun. I can promise you that we have baked and eaten tons of them in this country today. I don't dare to say how many I've eaten...they taste absolutely best still warm, straight from the plate with a glas of cold milk.
You can find a recipe in english here. Cinnamon buns they use demerera sugar in the recipe but we usually use ordinary castor sugar.
Chop,Chop and Slash
..
Killer queen that's me...
We are going to get the first frost tonight and I'm not at all happy about it. The frost really ruins everything, I have so many more things to harvest and no time....
Today I had to kill all the lovely dahlias in my potager, chop and slash. I felt very brutal when I armed with garden fork, scissors and secateurs massacred all my poor poor Dalhias. Now they are laying in black plastic boxes just like in a morgue with a name-tag tied around them. I was able though...(sigh) to save some blooms that I put indoors in vases to get a lovely blooming Friday...
~~~
..

If you are wondering what is earth I have on my kitchen table it is Cantharellus tubaeformis that I'm drying for later use. Below you find a picture from the woods of the little delicatessen.

...

this is one of the victims...
