Physalis - locally grown

At last, now in early September my Physalis are ready to harvest, sweet, pretty and very healthy. Full of vitamin C it is a true power-fruit or shall I call it power-berry. Eat locally grow! - you cannot beat home grown.

 Don't forget to save one little Physalis and harvest your own seeds - free seeds for 2011 growing season.

Can it get any better?

The last day of August gave us a day of glorious sunshine and I went for a long and lovely walk in the woods. Pure pleasure to walk in the woods in company with a lot of birds and butterflies. To my big surprise I have seen an incredible number of beautiful butterflies today evidently that means that the summer is not over yet. Warm and pleasant too and hardly any wind at all, it said 16 degrees on the car thermometer when I was on my way home. The basket was full of wonderful mushrooms, chanterelles mushrooms, golden chanterelle Cantharellus cibarius mostly but also some other nice ones. A favourite is what we call 'Karl Johan' - Porcino Boletus edulis  I just love finding those they are so good to slice up and dry, they are very useful in the winter dishes like caserols, stews and soups.

Sista dagen i Augusti bjöd på solsken och en underbar skogspromenad. Ren njutning att få vandra i skogen i sällskap med fåglar och en massa fjärilar. Ja dröm om min förvåning men idag har jag sett otroligt många vackra fjärilar så än är inte sommaren slut. Varmt och skönt var det också, 16 grader stod det på bilens termometer när jag skulle åka hemåt. Korgen blev härligt full av svamp, mestadels kantareller Cantharellus cibarius  men även några fina soppar. Karl Johan Boletus edulis tycker jag så mycket om att hitta för de torkar jag och hartill matlagning hela vintern tillsammans med höstkantarellerna som kommer snart. Det ser jag fram emot.

I'm Back...Armed with a Machete

After several weeks at sea I'm back on solid ground again. Back to my garden...but what a mess, a small disaster at the first glance. Armed with secateurs, machete, one mile of garden twine I'm ready to attac the 'garden'... jungle. I have had help from my friends with the watering ( a huge thank you to you! ) But as the weather has been wet-wet-wet watering has been easy, another problem accured of course the plants that I put on large tray for easy watering almost drawned instead. I will need to do some 'CPR' on those poor plant they are so pale and sad looking.

The last Lily of the season, a bit sad but it is the bitter truth. I chose this picture for  my August picture, it really stands there all alone in the border, stunning, bright and beautiful. All the other has already faded away into the long sleep of autumn.

Frülingsduft - a Kordes Rose

Ljuvliga Frülingduft står just nu i full blom.

This is my rose that I have on my header, the wonderful Frülingduft. It is in full bloom right now and I thing it is so adorable with its beautiful colour or rather colours as it is both pink, pale yellow and apricot. Addition to its beauty it is also very fragrant especially in the evenings...I just love this rose.

I didn't know the name of the rose earlier and I just called it me Watercolour Rose, read more about it here:

Frülingsduft - Kordes Rose

Wilhelm Kordes II (1891 - 1976) brukar betraktas som en av världens mest framstående rosförädlare. Hans pappa, också han vid namn Wilhelm Kordes, startade den 1 oktober 1887 en handelsträdgård i Elmshorn som snart nog endast sysslade med rosor. När sönerna Wilhelm och Hermann så småningom övertog firman under namnet Kordes & Söhne, förde de den till världsrykte. Då hade företaget flyttat från Elmshorn till Sparrieshoop. Man specialiserade sig på rosor som ägde skönhet, härdighet och friskhet. Idag frambringar firman 3,5 miljoner plantor per år och exporterar till mer än 30 länder.

 ...and the list goes on and on.



 All these gorgeous flowers ’in floribus’ all at once like a huge symphonic orchestra. An orchestra that preforms the musical melody of summertime right now, right here in my garden.

The mighty Rhododrendron must be the bass drum, irises are the bassoons and the daisies are all clarinets, the little violets just must be the violins. The piano?...Could it be the rows of purple and white lilacs in perfect harmony.

This is not an orchestra just a piano playing a piece of favourite Nordic music, a summer melody

Stuart and May - I will not forget you.

Forget-me-not

Last week when I visited my summerhouse I sat in a room next to the kitchen and suddenly I heard a strange sound from the kitchen, a rustling noise. It came from a plastic bag with my Danish rye bread. I realized pretty fast that ‘Stuart Little’ paid me a visit. I tossed a cork at the bag to frighten Stuart away but without luck. I quickly emptied a zinc bucket and pushed the bag into it. Now I was calm…and went for my camera to get a shot, as I opened the bag I saw this adorable little mouse, the sweetest thing and he was or she was so full that it could hardy move, totally content he was lying on the back. It is nice with a piece of Danish rye bread. I however had to go to the store and bye a new loaf. The mouse got its freedom among the hundreds of the months of May’s forget-me-nots. Soon my favourite month has come to an end, Stuart and May  -  I will not forget you.

More tulips from my garden and this time it is the Tulipa tarda. I find it very pretty in it's simplicity. Have you got an English name for it? I'm sure you have this tulip in the northern states of US, Canada and GB.

The plant is about 10-20 cm tall (up to 8 inches), dark green stem, 3-7 light green leaves that froms a rosette. The flowers are quite small up to 5 cm in diameter, star formed, off-white with yellow base. Outer segments are green with creamy white on some you see a purple stripe on the ouside edges. Often self-sown and does well on any soil. This tulipa tarda loves, as myself, the sun but enjoys the partial shade as well. You find this little tulip wild in Kirgizistan.

Tulips in bloom, what a joy!

Most of my tulips are botanical tulips I find them so very attractive, small and pretty, perhaps not as 'fancy' as the tall hybrid cultivars but they are just the way I like them. Another positive thing about the species tulips are that they are early, most of the hybridized are in bloom much later and then after they flowered I have to look at those dull sad looking leaves half the summer.

Botaniska tulpaner är verkligen mina favoriter, små, söta och framför allt tidiga. Varje år planterar jag fler för att jag tycker så mycket om dom. Tulipa greigii, Persian Pearl, Chopin och allt vad de heter. Jag tycker att rådjuren är inte lika heta på de botaniska tulpanerna som på hybriderna, vad tycker du? Har du märkt någon skillnad?
