Blooming Friday - Orchidaceae Phalaenopsis - AN ALIEN?

Today I join Katarina from Roses and Stuff with a post on the theme Blooming Friday!

I start my first Blooming Friday with an Orchid. Tadaa...

The Phalaenopsis

The Phalaenopsis belongs to the huge Orchidaceae family and the Phalaenopsis have some 60 species. Some are usually called Moth orchids because they are suppose to bear a resemblance to moths in flight. I think this Phalaenopsis looks like an alien of some kind. I suppose that is why we like them so much they are exiting, exotic, beautiful and a liiittle bit frightening.

This is also the flower I have in my Advent candleholder this year.

Trevlig helg

You've got the phal to bloom for you so beautifully! And great photo ... I love the lighting.
I know its a tropical plant and I know it should be very easy for me to grow it but I think I'm a bit in awe of it (absolutely the worst approach ... ask any orchid grower). I've got about 20 of them but I'm so fidgety with them that if one phal blooms I think I'm in heaven! (On the other hand the more 'difficult' orchids like dendrobiums bloom their heads off for me and I dont even notice)

Gail! you've got a vegetarian cat! Try to suggest carrots, perhaps...

Tyra, superduperfoton. Elegant ljus och så sofistikerat med det djupsvarta som bakgrund. De där kunde man ha på väggen! Jag blir sugen att pröva orkidéer – är de svåra?

Lovely orchid pictures. It is so nice to have flowers at this time of year. I have the same problem as Gail, a plant-eating cat.

Most orchids look unreal - I'd love to see them in their natural setting. Even there I cannot imagine they will look ordinary!

Ah Tyra, I do admire your skills with the camera and in the garden. Lovely orchid. Lovely photograph.

Wow Tyra. That's heavenly. Interesting info too. I'm not all that conversant about orchids. My sister recently bought me some tulip bulbs from Germany. I've been postponing its planting. Seeing your blooms reminds me of it. Time to work again.

Åhh, så tjusigt! En vit phanlaenopsis skulle passa fint hemma hos mig nu i juletid. Ha en trevlig andra advent!

BEAUTIFUL Tyra. I love your Phalaenopsis. I bought a mystery Phalaenopsis that I can't wait to see what color it is, etc. It has a new shoot now (that I wrote you about starting the baby from) so I hope it opens soon. Enjoy yours!!

You featured one of my favorites, dear Tyra, and your photos are stunning. I have posted many of my favorite orchids on my 2-year plus blog, delighted to see one of my 'old' cymbidiums about to bloom! And, yes, orchids are hauntingly beautiful!

My little orchidée that I got from auntie Eva two years ago is blooming for the fourth time. Maybe I have inherited a little bit of your green fingers :-D
