Tyra's Garden is a small garden on the island of Resarö situated in the inner part of the archipelago near the small town Vaxholm, outside Stockholm. Tyra's Garden is mostly an ornamental vegetable garden, my potager. But flowers are of course an important ingredience, for beauty and pollination. The climate in these parts is quite demanding as the northerly winds can be strong and cold. THIS BLOG 'Tyra's Garden' is not entirely a gardenblog it contains much more. From Seed to Bloom Clematis Gladys Picard

How to grow Clematis from seed.

I got some useful tips and ideas here from Mr.Greenthumb

I  also learnt that I will probably not get a Gladys, I will get something else. But still, I will have a go and see what I’ll end up with in the end.

This will be interesting…to be continued

Soothing remedy for coughs and colds

This post 'Once up on a Thyme' was originally uploaded by Tyra in the blog Tyra's Garden

Once up on a Thyme...

...I walked on a path lined with of thymes and sensed the marvellous amoratic leaves and I fell in love...
I just adore the fragrance and taste of this herb. It is a favourite both in the potager as well as in the kitchen. I even make a cough medicine with Thymus vulgaris in it, see recipe for Tyra's remedy intended for coughs and colds below but first some pictures.

Woolly thyme —the wooliest of all thymes, forms a thick ground-covering mat of tiny, densely hairy grayish green leaves. The foliage has subtle fragrance and is not the best thyme for culinary use nor for my remedy. In June-July the pretty tiny pink tubular flowers appears. Plants grow to only about 5 cm or so in height. Woolly thyme thrives in dry, well-drained neutral to alkaline soil in full sun. Walks, rock gardens, stone walls, and pond borders (if dry) are all excellent habitats from the creeping of the lovely Thymus pseudolanuginosus. This thyme spills gracefully over stone walls and can be grown between stone pavers. To propagate, divide the plants in spring or autumn, or sow seed in early spring.

Thymus vulgaris Garden Thyme,
Thymus x citriodorus Lemon Thyme
and Orange fragrant Thyme Thymus fragantissiumus

are in my belief the best for culinary use. For medical use take the Thymus vulgaris.

Now for the recipe...

Tyra's soothing remedy for coughs and colds

Make a strong infusion of thyme, elderberry flowers and sage (let it cool) add lemon and a generous amount of honey and for adults 1/3 part of gin or congac. Drink small amount of this mixture several times per day, it is really soothing.

For a cold it is beneficent to add fresh ginger, chili and/or garlic as well.

Susie on Gotland says "Here on Gotland the wild thyme growns in the meadows by the sea and it's so nice to go there late in the summer evenings as the sun set - and so on top of that sense the smell of crushed thyme. Wonderful! Oh, how I long for next year!"

Underbart! Oj, vad jag längtar till nästa år!! "

Highgate Cemetery - London

Highgate Cemetery
(Western)
...
Today I'm going to show you some pictures from my visit to this amazing place called Highgate Cemetery, just about one hour from the City of London's hectic pulse. I'm a huge fan and admirer of this enchanted spot on earth. It lush, green, so very beautiful and calm.
...
The family Tomb of Samuel Whitfield.

The cemetery's grounds are full of mature trees, shrubbery and wild flowers all of which have been planted and grown without human influence. ( I don't think that is completely true) I found a numerous wild flowers like for instance Bluebells Scilla non-scripta and Ramsons Allium ursinum. The guide told me that in a few weeks the wild poppies Papaver will bloom and can you imagine the red 'lanterns' lighten up the grounds. It must be wonderful. The grounds are a haven for birds and small animal. The cemeterys tree crowns form a wonderful most amazing canopy and the sound in the cemetery or the lack of noice is overwhelming.
I think this old tree below is a Lebanon Cedar

Catacomb of P.W. Talbot
The Highgate cemetery is devided into two parts the West and the East Cemetery. All my pictures here are from the West Cemetery. This Victorian Cemetery was opened in 1839. The initial design was by the architect Stephen Geary.

'Although its most famous occupant in the east cemetery is probably Karl Marx (whose tomb's attempted bombing in 1970 is still recalled by some Highgate residents), there are many other prominent figures, Victorian and otherwise, buried at Highgate Cemetery.' Facts from Wikipedia read more here

Soak the Gardener! - Blub blub in my Tub tub

Soak the Gardener!
This is my bathroom I built a few years ago. It has this marine touch, inspired of old wooden boats I built my bathroom in mahogny, with brass details and old furniture and pebbles from allover the world. There is an article in this weeks 'Drömhem & Trädgård' a Swedish magazine (Dreamhome & Garden)

Recycled piece of furniture.

GARDEN FURNITURE

I went to an outdoor auction in the countryside last weekend and look what a found. A pedestal for my greenhouse isn’t it just perfect. Old, worn and a bit shabby but nice, just the way I want it to be. It will be great for the greenhouse and the garden. All my pieces of furniture in the greenhouse are real bargains, they are old and worn, now I have been missing a pedestal and there it was…for 40 kronor (7 dollar). Recycle more!

Have a great day!

Columbine - Aquilegia vulgaris L. about SEEDS

Seed collecting tip from a "seed geek"

About collecting seeds from your Aquliegia Vulgaris L. Here is a tip when if you want to collect seeds from your Columbines and you want to have order among all the different varieties, shapes and colours.

Put a tag on the plants when they still are flowering, write down the name, colour, height etc. Then you know when it is time to harvest the seeds and all seed capules looks the same you know which one for instance is... blue, low or duuble....

I'm a real "seed geek"and yes I do have a table just for that purpose. It's an old table I found in a jumble sale, a true bargain. It's so suitable for seeds with the white surface on which I write the name of the seeds straight on the table. Perfect!

My seed table in the greenhouse

Ha det bra, skriv en rad vet ja' - Have a nice day!

Tjohoo even more Tomatoes...

They say that food with bright colours are extremely good for you, this must be great then.
Although I wonder if I can get an overdose :-)
Harvest of the day perfect for a nice tomato sallad.

i småbitar.

Tips 'n' ideas - My "antidepressant" drug

Today I really need an antidepressant drug.
The weather is appalling, I had a bad day at work and I think I’m coming down with a cold.
I need something to cheer me up!
I found these “happy pills”

A simple yet beautiful Dahlia mignon "Firebird"

Now I feel a little bit better, tonight I think I'll spend the evening in Tuscany. The DVD Under the Tuscan Sun will be perfect. Maybe a glass of Chianti and something nice to go with it.
