The first garden book to be the read this year was a book from Claus Dalby. In this impressive and heavy plus five hundred pages book, we follow him on a garden tour. The author takes us on a grand garden tour through Scandinavia, visiting hundreds of garden and of course the same amount of astonishing greenhouses.

Claus Dalby has this amazing eye for what to shoot with him camera. That really impressed me on his visit in my garden last fall. He registered in a blink of an eye all interesting items worth detecting in my garden on that very day. He saw exactly those things that I wanted him to notice, most astonishing.  If it was plants or arrangement he caught them all with his camera.

After having read the book I have one greenhouse that really caught my heart and that is the greenhouse at Hørsholm in Denmark. The owners to this magnificent greenhouse are Margit and Knut-Georg Engen. The greenhouse was built in 1948 and has an area of 60 square meters. I love the design it is elegant yet not too extravagant it still looks like a greenhouse should look like if you know that I mean.

If you are looking for a greenhouse design or have a general interest of Scandinavian interior designs this is a good book to start off with. I know that it isn’t in your language but I think it can be of great help anyway as it is most inspirational.

Nu har jag läst årets första trädgårdsbok och det är en
riktig "tegelsten" från Claus Dalby. Som alla de övriga av Claus andra böcker är det här en
underbar bok att bläddra i, han är riktigt bra fotograf och skriver rakt och
lättbegripligt.
 Han har en fantastisk förmåga att se alla de små detaljerna och det var jag verkligen
fascinerad av vid vårt möte i höstas. Han var så snabb på att upptäcka alla de
små "godbitarna" som fanns att fånga just den dagen i min potager. Om det
så gällde växter, rätta vinklar och alla små vrår så såg han vad jag brukar se och
fånga med mitt öga i min trädgård.

Mitt favoritbesök var i det ”Engenska Växthuset” i Hørsholm.
Där bor Margit och Knut-Georg (vilket fint namn, två gamla kunganamn ihopsatta)
Växthuset är från 1948 och har en ansenlig yta på 60kvm, alldeles perfekt,
vilken dröm! Högt i tak och fin nockvinkel. Det här växthuset blev absolut min
favorit när jag samlat alla intryck från boken.

This is a picture that reminds me of a picture by the Swedish artist Hanna Pauli and the picture is "Breakfast time". The photo of my greenhouse looks like it is taken on an early morning in Juni. I can imagine myself carrying out a tray with the breakfast, to enjoy it out in the green. But it is not, it is actually taken by Claus Dalby at his visit in september last fall.

Här är en bild av mitt växthus som Claus Dalby har tagit och den påminner mig så om Hanna Paulis målning, Frukostdags. Det känns som en försommar morgon där jag precis är i färd med att duka upp till frukost i det gröna men i själva verket är det faktiskt en eftermiddag i september månad.

"Det är en fin sommarmorgon. Solen skiner. En kvinna vaknade imorse och beslutade sig för att göra frukost till hela familjen ute. 
De bor i en fin by. Omkring deras hus finns en liten skog. Kvinnan tänker att hon ska göra frukost i skogen.  
Hon ställer bordet och stolarna under ett stort träd. Sen dukar hon bordet. När hon är klar väcker hon barnen och sin man. Kvinnan ser glad ut"

I Bought the Crown Jewels

Chia - Crown Jewels

What little did I know?…

and when I entered the world of Chia.

I have just received a few seed packets from Baker Creek Heirlooms Seeds for my potager. I always want to know a little about the plant I’m going to grow, consequently I looked up my Chia - Crown Jewels and entered a new world, most fascinating. I landed in American history, health, ancient food and future ‘super’ food. Amazing, do you know... I’ve bought a miracle! Perhaps that is why they are called just Crown Jewels or it could be because the flower in its simplicity yet beauty look like a small crown with precious blue-purple stones in it.

Chia - Crown Jewels

(Salvia columbariae ) A different Salvia species with a long history, this heirloom Salvia was grown as a staple food crop by Native Americans years ago. It has a high nutrition value. In cultivation, it needs good drainage, sun and dry weather to grow to its fullest potential. Called Chia in Mexico and other Central American countries, it is also a special ornamental plant with decorative grey-green leaves and pretty colourful light purplish blue flowers.

Helleborus - Ny bok av Claus Dalby

I got this book called 'Juleroser og Påskeklokker' from a friend of mine and it is so wonderful. A whole book about Helleborus - it has these amazing pictures and a lot of useful information for a novice as myself on the subject Hellerborus . I do recommend you to read it, if you’re not great with the Danish lingo it does really matter it is a feast for the eye.

Claus Dalby has written a lot of beautiful garden books through the years one of them is Drivhus drömmar (Greenhouse dreams) and I wrote about that favourite in 2008. More?...Meet Claus Dalby’s fantastic garden in Risskov

Do follow this link to Ashwood nurseries and read more about the Helleborus. They do have mailorder :-) but I guess it would be frightfully expensive for me to make an order from UK. I just have to find a more local distributor.

I haven’t got a lot of Helleborus in my garden but after reading this book and after the 'visit' to Ashwood Nurseries I do have to make a change about that. I wonder if I could grow them from seeds?

Sunday evening - I'm so content because I'm ready at last. Yesterday we had a marvellous day with sunshine and quite warm weather for the season.

At the moment I’m reading a very interesting book about the No-Work garden a Swedish book by Ingrid Olausson and it is based on a meeting and interview with a most fascinating lady Ruth Stout the author of No-Work Garden Book, it is an old book from 1971, I got a Xerox copied copy from my dear neighbour ‘Nuttan’ this is her nickname she is not at all nutty as a matter of fact she is a really smart lady. A lot in the book is about mulching and for that we need hay, straw and leaves and that I still had plenty of in my garden. Well…boots on and out to gather all that absolutely free mulching material…one and a half day later I’m done. Hard work for a No-Work garden ;-)

The kitchen garden is now tucked in, ready for the winter.

Paph and a Rare Book - It's Blooooming Friday!

Apart from my own family I have another family that gives me great joy and happiness through the long winter months and they are the Orchid family Orchidaceae. Here is one of the members, let me introduce Paphiopedilum, I call ‘her’ Paph for short. Paph is a stunning and mysterious looking beauty but ‘she’ is not as long lasting as ‘her’ relative Phal….that is Phalaenopsis that you have already met here

Bortsett från min egen familj så har jag en annan familj som ger mej både lycka och glädje genom dessa förfärligt långa vintermånader och det är Orchidé familjen . Här är en av dom, låt mej få presentera Paphiopedilum, jag kallar ’henne’ bara för Paph. Paph är en skönhet, lite mystiskt vacker tycker jag men hom är inte lika hållbar som sin släkting Phal….Phalaenopsis alltså. Idag är det blommig fredag…igen! I just love the cover on this book and when I read more about it I found out that is very valuable as a matter of fact it is worth a fortune! Perhaps you got it in your attic...

Written by K.L von Blume 190 pages, 66 hand made steel engraved/litho plates 55 fully hand water coloured plates. I have seen a few of them and they are wonderful I just adore hand coloured lithographs.

Karl Ludwig von Blume was born 1796 in Braunschweig in Germany and spent most of his professional life working in the Netherlands, where he worked in the state herbarium, Rijksherbarium, Leiden.
