Tyra's Garden is a small garden on the island of Resarö situated in the inner part of the archipelago near the small town Vaxholm, outside Stockholm. Tyra's Garden is mostly an ornamental vegetable garden, my potager. But flowers are of course an important ingredience, for beauty and pollination. The climate in these parts is quite demanding as the northerly winds can be strong and cold. THIS BLOG 'Tyra's Garden' is not entirely a gardenblog it contains much more. Cydonia oblonga - Quince Marmalade

This post 'Cydonia oblonga - Quince marmalade' was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius Lindhe in the blog

Some argue that the Quince was the 'apple' Eve got in the paradise, could it be possible ?

 Some people say it was. It is a very exciting fruit with an exceptional and exotic fragrance and taste. Stunningly beautiful and very photogenic too, don’t you think. I wish to get a plant into my jardin de potager this year, maybe I can get hold of one here in Sweden, otherwise I just have to go and abroad to get one. (Wishful thinking)

You can see how the flower of the Quince looks like here in another post about Quince, Cydonia oblonga

~ ~ ~

Scents

This post 'Scents' was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius Lindhe in the blog Tyras Trädgård/Tyra's Garden

Scents!

Hm...

 I'm thinking roses in my garden, dandelions in the field, lily-of-the-valley in the glade of the forest, honeysuckle just by my door...the list goes on forever. It is hard to choose one scent for this weeks theme.
I found this picture with both fragrant roses and raspberries in it, now this is a lot of scents in this picture. I would love to sit at that table today!

I wish you all a lovely weekend.

Quince - Cydonia oblonga

This post Quince - Cydonia oblonga was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius Lindhe in the blog Tyra's Garden

Quince

Photos by Kenneth, and the illustrated  Cydonia oblonga wikipedia
Original book source: Prof. Dr. Otto Wilhelm Thomé Flora von Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz 1885.

Quince Marmalade

500 gram of quince-pulp
500 gram of sugar
1 lemon, squeezed

Remove the core of the quinces and cook in boiling water till tender to the fork. Drain and cool. Sift the pulp. Add sugar and lemon. Boil this mixture for 10 minutes, stir well, you don’t want it to burn in the bottom of the saucepan. I use a sugar this pectin added and then I just have to bring it to boil and simmer it for 1 minute.

This Quince marmalade in great together with cheeses like a Pecorino, Mature Cheddar or why not perhaps the greatest of then all the Queso Manchego  (Viejo).

Cotognata

I similar recipe with quince is the Cotognata. Quince paste, Salento style

This typically Sicilian dessert Cotognata  is customary to make it in a small mold, in the shape of a fish or leaf. But you can make it in a pan and then cut it in to pieces and roll/dust them with fine sugar. Let you Cotognata dry in a cool and airy place.

This is what wikipedia says about this sweet.

- Dulce de membrillo or Carne de membrillo in Spanish, marmelada in Portuguese, codonyat in Catalan, Cotognata in Italian, is a sweet spread or a dessert,  (quince paste, quince jelly, quince candy or quince meat).Traditionally and predominantly from Portugal, Italy (exported when the South of Italy was Catalan) and Spain, dulce de membrillo is a firm, sticky, sweet reddish hard paste made of the quince (Cydonia oblonga) fruit.

Did you know that the word marmalade comes from the Portuguese word marmelada, meaning "quince preparation"

I found this Persian recipe I just have to try later...it has lime and cardamom in it.
MORABAA-YEH BEH 2 kg of small quinces, 1,5 kg sugar, lime and cardamom

Calamondin and Cerula vinula

This post Calamondin and Cerula vinula was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius-Lindhe in the blog Tyra's Garden.

Beauty and The Beast

The Beauty, my Calamondin tree had a visit this summer of a beast or at least shall we say a beastly looking thing. The visitor was a larvae of the Puss moth. An odd looking little fellow don’t you think?

 The Puss Moth
Scientific name: Cerula  or Cerura vinula, (I have seen both spellings) wingspan from 65 to 80mm, caterpillars feed on willows and poplars. its natural habitat is woods, parks and gardens. The puss moth is a creamy-white or greyish-white moth with lovely grey marbled markings. The abdomen features black and white stripes. The name comes from the cat-like fur all over the body. Puss in Swedish = kiss in English :-)

Calamodin
"The juice of the calamondin can be used like lemon or lime to make refreshing beverages, to flavor fish, to make cakes, marmalades, pies, preserves, sauces and to use in soups and teas." read more Calamondin - The Most Versatile Citrus

Fragrant and Tasty

This post 'Fragrant and Tasty' was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallséníus-Lindhe in the blog Tyra's Garden

 October in the Greenhouse

Geraniums, Elberberries, Winters quashes and Lavender

 The growing season for 2010 is almost over and I've cleaned out the greenhouse. Gone are all the tomatoes and most of the chilies too. I have dug up some parsley, tarragon and chives and planted them in pots and brought them into the greenhouse so I can enjoy them a bit longer. Today I harvested the last of the Lavender Lavandula augustifolia and I haven't ever seen them so bright in the colour. If you like the Elderberries Sambucus nigra now it’s a good time to pick them just as the frost has arrived and before the birds eat them. I’m actually going to give them to the birds this year but I'll give my Elderberry harvest to the birds I have outside my kitchen window, then I can watch them eat and that is always enjoyable.

Don't be a stranger my friend I would just love to hear from you!

Miss Emilie's Opal Plum Pie

This post 'Miss Emilie's Opal Plum Pie' was originally uploaded by Tyra in the blog Tyras Garden

Now I so wish you could taste this!

Miss Emilie's plum and almond pie, it is so delicious. The thin crispy pie shell merges together with from the plum slightly moist layer of coarse almond paste and then on the top the lovely sugar powdered Opal plums. It is beautiful to look at and absolutely scrumptious, sweet in taste and yet still a bit tangy from the Opal fruit.

October flowers and food.
 - Echinacea with a butterfly friend, my red Morton's basil,
Opal plum fruit and  Miss Emilie's plum & almond tart.

Opal is a Swedish self-fertile plumtree, a successful cross of a french and an english plum. This sure is one of my favourites. Beautiful and tasty, it is a really nice cooking plum too, perfect for marmalades and chutneys.

~ ~ ~

 This is what Ashridge trees says about the Opal plum tree.

"Opal plums are sweet, bite-sized dessert plums that range in colour from bright yellow to deep purple, on the same tree and often on the same fruit. They have pale yellow flesh with a characteristic Greengage flavour. Opal plums are early fruiters in a good year you can start picking the first fruit at the end of July. Because they are so early, Opal plums ripen rapidly and so do better in the South of England; they also reward being planted in a south facing spot - trained against a south facing wall or ina warm corner is perfect.

Opal's History and Parentage

Opal is one of the creations of the Horticultural Research Stations in Alnarp and Balsgard in Sweden. It was produced from a cross between two classic plum trees, Early Favourite and Oullins Gage, which are respectively tough English and tasty French varieties.

Plum Tree Pollination guide for Opal Prunus domestica

Opal plum trees are truly self-fertile, which means no pollination partner is needed. It really is a good plum as it crops steadily each year." read further at  Ashridge trees

Physalis - locally grown

At last, now in early September my Physalis are ready to harvest, sweet, pretty and very healthy. Full of vitamin C it is a true power-fruit or shall I call it power-berry. Eat locally grow! - you cannot beat home grown.

 Don't forget to save one little Physalis and harvest your own seeds - free seeds for 2011 growing season.

CHANGE

~~~
Time for me to change the header and to make a small change in the design.
Winter blue and Indian red?
poster from easy art
Winter apples or apple blossoms?
Decisions, decisions...which one to take...hm
Well you already know the answer.
A warm indian red for the border and an impressionistic photo of my appleblossoms.
What do you say, do you like it?
~~~

December Frost in Garden

As an amateur photographer I find things like frost crystals, fog, mist and water are just wonderful, it is a great way to capture a bit of 'drama' into the pictures. This is 'Lucia' once again singing the final verse - of the last song of the season. This Rose has been so fantasic this year 'in floribus' for almost 6 months!

In the soft sunlight of December - Lichtkönigin 'Lucia'

And once again the last of the explorer rose The Canadian 'John Davies' now dressed in a coat of frost...

...even a simple straw looks spectacular with the frost crystals

The sloe bitten by the frost, my 'topiary' Blackthorne, now is the best time to pick the berries!

and last a picture of the thornless Bramble

I wish you all a lovely weekend/ Tyra

Boost up your Immune System - with a remedy from the garden.

This post 'Boost up your Immune System - with a remedy from the garden.' was originally uploaded by Tyra in the blog Tyra's Garden

The 2009 flu, the Swine Influenza. A virus subtype H1N1 is here but is it going to be pandemic? Well we don’t know this yet. But here are some tips and ideas what you can do to avoid getting the Swine flu.

They say to wash your hands thoroughly and often are the most important thing to do. You can also boost up your immune system with vitamins, minerals and herbs. Some of them are quite familiar; perhaps you already have them in your garden.

Boost up your immune system with a remedy from the garden.

1. Zinc you find among other things in seeds like; sunflower, poppy, sesame, mustard and linseed.

2. Vitamin C - Fruits and berries and do you remember the Sea-Buckthorn Hippophae L? It has 12 times more vitamin C than oranges!

3. Vitamin D – Gardening is excellent for the vitamin D uptake :-)

4. Vitamin E, omega 3 and 6 and Zinc as well from Flax. Linum usitatissimum Flaxseed or linseeds oil.

5. Herbs good for the immune system; Echinacea augustifoliae radix, Echinacea purpurea and Echinacea pallida. (radix)

6. Probiotics - like the Acidophilus (a beneficial bacteria)

This last one is not from our gardens but you can find it in a lot of products, I buy as Filmjölk and it is really good for the stomach.

And then again, wash your hands! It's easy and absolutely free.

Update

From our Doc. Green thumb.

'That post was so insightful dear Tyra! The only effective method to fight Swine Flu has to be through personal hygiene and immunity enhancement. While the health authorities keep harping about the masks and Tamiflu, they neglect the most important and basic things which you beautifully highlighted.'

Thank you!

Another huge thank you to my Blotanical friend that has nominated my blogs for best European blog! I'm amazed and very happy. Blooming Friday again, the weeks goes so very fast! This is the last Friday of this gorgeous month September. You find more participants here at Katarina.

Happy Gardening!

Harvest of my Sea buckthorn

This post 'Harvest of my Buckthorn' was originally uploaded by Tyra in the blog Tyra's Garden

Harvest Monday in Tyra’s garden - Tomatoes, blackberries and Sea-buckthorn.

~HAVTORNSKÖRD~

Harvest of my Sea-buckthorn

I planted my Sea-buckthorn bushes a few years ago, three Juliet (female) and one Romeo (male plant) and this is my first harvest ever! This amazing power-food-berry has a fantastic exotic taste and of all the berries of the earth Sea buckthorn is probably that one berry that contains most vitamins in large quantities.

~~~
This is what Wikipedia says about Sea-buckthorn berries - The fruit of the plant has a high vitamin C content—in a range of 114 to 1550 mg per 100 grams with an average content (695 mg per 100 grams) about 12 times greater than Oranges— placing sea-buckthorn fruit among the most enriched plant sources of vitamin C[1]. The fruit also contains dense contents of carotenoids, vitamin E, amino acids, dietary minerals, β-sitosterol and polyphenolic acids.
~~~

That was all for today, have a great week!
Ha det gott/ TYRA

Zinnia elegans 'Whirligig fun'

This post, 'Zinnia elegans 'whirligig fun' was originally uploaded and written by Tyra at the blog Tyra's Garden http://waxholm.blogspot.com/

Blooming friday at Katarina's Roses and stuff - Katarina askes "Have you anything in your garden that pleases you extra much? - Please write and tell us about it "

Well Katarina it must be the Zinnia elegans.

I haven’t got many of my favourite flowers(Zinnia) in my garden this year unfortunatly, something accidently happened….I killed my seedling! However here I have one gorgeous Zinnia elegans ‘Whirligig fun’ that survived the massacre.

July in Tyra's Garden - Juli i Tyras Trädgård

Collage 'July'

I wish you all a lovely weekend.

I'm gonna weigh anchor and go sailing for a few days...
