Tyra's Garden is a small garden on the island of Resarö situated in the inner part of the archipelago near the small town Vaxholm, outside Stockholm. Tyra's Garden is mostly an ornamental vegetable garden, my potager. But flowers are of course an important ingredience, for beauty and pollination. The climate in these parts is quite demanding as the northerly winds can be strong and cold. THIS BLOG 'Tyra's Garden' is not entirely a gardenblog it contains much more. Winter Flowers - Phalaenopsis

We have now lit candle number two and we are entering the second week of Advent, this wonderful time that comes to an end on Christmas Day.

I wonder... what kind of flowers do you have in your windows during December?

On my windowsill I have a lot of orchids and this one has such a pretty colour, almost Christmas red. I cannot think of a winter flowering plant that is more durable and that flowers for such a long time as the Phalaenopsis.

Tips and ideas how to care for your Phalaenopsis,
about - watering, fertilizer, light, potting etc.

What to do after the blooming is over. After care.

Meet my Phakenopsis!

...

Phakenopsis yes this is one of my husbands favourite houseplant it is so durable. Extremely long-lasting as a matter of fact it has been flowering in my kitchen window since…last January. It doesn’t need much care at all. Have you guessed it already? It’s a fake. The ‘mother plant’ is an old orchid that I have had for years and it has never bloomed again so instead of throwing it away a bought this fake Phalaenopsis and let the mother plant adopt it. I think sometimes it’s OK to cheat and use a fake and this ‘Phakenopsis’ looks really well on my kitchen windowsill.

Today it is Blooming Friday again and do look in at Katarina’s Roses and stuff and meet all the other participants. I think it is going to be a great day today, I have something really nice that I’m looking forward to tonight, they are showing a new program on the TV this evening The English garden’s the first programme in the series of six.

Here we have orchids flourishing in the greenhouse, it is summertime…ah

Paph and a Rare Book - It's Blooooming Friday!

Apart from my own family I have another family that gives me great joy and happiness through the long winter months and they are the Orchid family Orchidaceae. Here is one of the members, let me introduce Paphiopedilum, I call ‘her’ Paph for short. Paph is a stunning and mysterious looking beauty but ‘she’ is not as long lasting as ‘her’ relative Phal….that is Phalaenopsis that you have already met here
...

The paphiopedilums (genus Paphiopedilum) – often abbreviated Paph and colloquially known as paphs in horticulture – are flowering plants in the orchid family (Orchidaceae). It contains about 80 accepted species nowadays, some of which are natural hybrids. These slipper orchids are native to South China, India, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, and form their own subtribe, the Paphiopedilinae. Text: wikipedia Paphiopedilum

...A Lovely Looking Rare Book of Orchids.

Karl Ludwig von Blume 1796 - 1862

I just love the cover on this book and when I read more about it I found out that is very valuable as a matter of fact it is worth a fortune! Perhaps you got it in your attic...

Written by K.L von Blume 190 pages, 66 hand made steel engraved/litho plates 55 fully hand water coloured plates. I have seen a few of them and they are wonderful I just adore hand coloured lithographs.

Karl Ludwig von Blume was born 1796 in Braunschweig in Germany and spent most of his professional life working in the Netherlands, where he worked in the state herbarium, Rijksherbarium, Leiden.

I wish you all to have a great weekend - TYRA

Blooming Friday - Orchidaceae Phalaenopsis - AN ALIEN?

© This post was originally uploaded and written by Tyra

Today I join Katarina from Roses and Stuff with a post on the theme Blooming Friday!

I start my first Blooming Friday with an Orchid. Tadaa...

The Phalaenopsis

The Phalaenopsis belongs to the huge Orchidaceae family and the Phalaenopsis have some 60 species. Some are usually called Moth orchids because they are suppose to bear a resemblance to moths in flight. I think this Phalaenopsis looks like an alien of some kind. I suppose that is why we like them so much they are exiting, exotic, beautiful and a liiittle bit frightening.

This is also the flower I have in my Advent candleholder this year.
