My Indoor Miniature Garden

I got this crazy and wild idea last night that I would like to have an indoor succulent garden ;-) or perhaps more appropriately put an indoor garden with succulents. I know, I know... I'm totally bonkers! This is the result, I'm not finished with it yet, got to get more plants and another kind of lighting. I lined the table drawerI with a piece of plastic coated fabric, added soil and planted my pots into soil and then filled up with crushed cacao shells

Voilà! I got my first miniature garden and it is in my living room. I'm so satisfied with the result, I wonder what my Hubby says when he arrives from Paris tonight.

January in the Garden...well it is certainly not much green out there.

I’m not a huge fan of the month January; as a matter of fact I would like to press the delete button and make it go away. It is the coldest month of the year here on my latitude. I aim for and always wish to work my garden all year around but I must admit I never manage to do that, but I’m stubborn and I’ll never give up. Some time I'll get my four season garden. (Perhaps I have to move)

This is the month for planning and dreaming and this year is no different. I’ve started to plan the structure of my garden and rotation plan for 2013 and I’ve also order some of the seeds that I need.  Now I just have to wait for Valentine’s Day; that is the day when I start off with my sowing indoors on the veranda - Operation Occupation

You have to do the best of it...here we have some pictures to brighten up even the darkest of winter-days

The first garden book to be the read this year was a book from Claus Dalby. In this impressive and heavy plus five hundred pages book, we follow him on a garden tour. The author takes us on a grand garden tour through Scandinavia, visiting hundreds of garden and of course the same amount of astonishing greenhouses.

Claus Dalby has this amazing eye for what to shoot with him camera. That really impressed me on his visit in my garden last fall. He registered in a blink of an eye all interesting items worth detecting in my garden on that very day. He saw exactly those things that I wanted him to notice, most astonishing.  If it was plants or arrangement he caught them all with his camera.

After having read the book I have one greenhouse that really caught my heart and that is the greenhouse at Hørsholm in Denmark. The owners to this magnificent greenhouse are Margit and Knut-Georg Engen. The greenhouse was built in 1948 and has an area of 60 square meters. I love the design it is elegant yet not too extravagant it still looks like a greenhouse should look like if you know that I mean.

If you are looking for a greenhouse design or have a general interest of Scandinavian interior designs this is a good book to start off with. I know that it isn’t in your language but I think it can be of great help anyway as it is most inspirational.

Nu har jag läst årets första trädgårdsbok och det är en
riktig "tegelsten" från Claus Dalby. Som alla de övriga av Claus andra böcker är det här en
underbar bok att bläddra i, han är riktigt bra fotograf och skriver rakt och
lättbegripligt.
 Han har en fantastisk förmåga att se alla de små detaljerna och det var jag verkligen
fascinerad av vid vårt möte i höstas. Han var så snabb på att upptäcka alla de
små "godbitarna" som fanns att fånga just den dagen i min potager. Om det
så gällde växter, rätta vinklar och alla små vrår så såg han vad jag brukar se och
fånga med mitt öga i min trädgård.

Mitt favoritbesök var i det ”Engenska Växthuset” i Hørsholm.
Där bor Margit och Knut-Georg (vilket fint namn, två gamla kunganamn ihopsatta)
Växthuset är från 1948 och har en ansenlig yta på 60kvm, alldeles perfekt,
vilken dröm! Högt i tak och fin nockvinkel. Det här växthuset blev absolut min
favorit när jag samlat alla intryck från boken.

This is a picture that reminds me of a picture by the Swedish artist Hanna Pauli and the picture is "Breakfast time". The photo of my greenhouse looks like it is taken on an early morning in Juni. I can imagine myself carrying out a tray with the breakfast, to enjoy it out in the green. But it is not, it is actually taken by Claus Dalby at his visit in september last fall.

Här är en bild av mitt växthus som Claus Dalby har tagit och den påminner mig så om Hanna Paulis målning, Frukostdags. Det känns som en försommar morgon där jag precis är i färd med att duka upp till frukost i det gröna men i själva verket är det faktiskt en eftermiddag i september månad.

"Det är en fin sommarmorgon. Solen skiner. En kvinna vaknade imorse och beslutade sig för att göra frukost till hela familjen ute. 
De bor i en fin by. Omkring deras hus finns en liten skog. Kvinnan tänker att hon ska göra frukost i skogen.  
Hon ställer bordet och stolarna under ett stort träd. Sen dukar hon bordet. När hon är klar väcker hon barnen och sin man. Kvinnan ser glad ut"

December morning

Sunday morning and I'm up before the birds. The house is quiet and I'm on the veranda watching enjoying my morning coffe and the dawn. Isn't just heavenly to watch a pale december sun rising.

I have this little figurine in one of the bedrooms and this morning you was especially pretty as she was standing in the sun among the green ivy. She's actually Swedish, made in Ekeby a very long time ago.

BEGONIA in the greenhouse

Today's flower is a Begonia

I grow most of my begonias in my greenhouse. They really thrive in the humid, warm greenhouse in the shade of all my chillie plants. I once, now many years ago, saw Begonias grow in the shade, on the ground under the trees in Mexico. White small-flowering Begonias in the wild, it was amazingly beautiful sight. I will never forget it and now when I have them in my greenhouse I think of that extraordinary trip to Mexico every time I attend to my little flowers.

Cultivation of Begonia  "Most are forest understory plants and require bright shade; few will tolerate full sun, especially in warmer climates. In general, begonias require a well-drained growing medium that is neither constantly wet nor allowed to dry out completely."

Flowers of August - Zinnia and Dahlia

Today's flowers from my potager are Zinnia and Dahlia. I think, both are very stunning flowers, true eye-catchers in the garden. They are typical August flowers for me. Both this Dahlia 'Thomas Edison'and Zinnia 'Elegance' are the same height as myseft! I had to climp up on a stool to reach up and take this photo.

The Zinnia is from seed and was planted in April and the Dahlia is from tubers that I've had for some years now and was replanted in fertile soil in last May.

A blue little "sun" that just shines for five hours, after that it fades away and start to make seeds for next years Chicory lettuce. An amazng and beatiuful flower in my August potager.

Can a flower be Kitschy?

Today, the peonies starts to flower in my garden. It has been raining heavily the last few days and the poor branches on the peonies really need all the support they can get. I think this peony is a masterpiece, I know they can be almost too good on the edge to being vulgar, but still this is really what I need on a rainy day as this one.

June - A garden gone wild

I let all my flowers run wild in the garden up to Midsummer. The upcoming weekend with Midsummer’s Eve has always been an important day in our family and I say for most of the Swedish families. We all come together family and friends and eat our special midsummer menu and dance with the younger members of the families around the Maypole.

A lot of decorations are made for the Midsummer festivities with wild-flowers from Mother Nature as well as flowers from the garden. This is why I always save and let my garden really run wild up to Midsummer. I need flowers for the Maypole, the vases, midsummer garlands and to make a midsummer wreath to put in the hair.

Fram till och med midsommar så spar jag allt med blommor på i köksträdgården. De skall få pryda kransar och vaser till midsommarafton. Däremot efter midsommar förflutit så får de ge plats åt mer ätliga saker. läs mer i KÖKSTRÄDGÅRDEN

Papaver and  Aquilegia vulgaris

Irises i full bloom, the really thieves in a dry and sunny position I have in the garden. If I just make sure that their rhizomes not are overgrown by a lot of other plants. the rhizomes need air and sunshine.

Irisen är riktigt lättodlad och nästan skötselfri. Mina står i ett stenparti tillsammans med vallmo och såpnejlika. Mina irisar stortrivs på sitt väldränerade, varma och soliga läge. Iris behöver sol minst halva dagen. Jorden här är torr och mager men irisarna gillar ju det. Vallmon däremot gillar det till en början men när allt efter sommaren lider och det blir snustorrt uppe på kullarna och efter blomningen så ser de lite tilltufsade ut men de gör de nog i alla rabatter när jag tänker efter.

Iris blommar inte om iris-rhizomerna ligger för djupt i jorden. Vid plantering ska de läggas horisontalt och ytligt. Översidan ska anas vid jordytan och det är viktigt att solen når rhizomen. På mina stenpartikullar växer också en hel del gräs vilket jag verkligen vill att det skall göra men rensar man bort lite runt irisarna så svarar de snällt med att växa till sig och ge fin blomning.
