Happy Birthday! Mr. Magnus B. Nilsson

 The famous Swedish nurseryman that celebrate his 105th birthday today.

The gardener and breeder who is the "father" to one of my favourite perennial flower, the Rudbeckia ‘Magnus’ Echinacea purpurea. The Rudbeckia ‘Magnus’ was the plant of the year in 1998 both here in Sweden as well as abroad. I just love this perennial coneflower with the most fascinating colour combination.  The rusty centre combined with the pale cerise coloured silk-like petals. It is not just we people that enjoyes Rudbeckia ‘Magnus’, so does the butterflies and bees too, they love it.

This is an ornamental pot-flower that is perfect for our November weather conditions. Especially this November, we still have this wonderful mild weather. I really love it. It reminds me of the winters I spent in UK; rather wet, mild and foggy. We haven’t had Jack Frost here at all! Thank you - and that is the way the Cyclamen and I like it to be until… Christmas. Although we do, of course, like it to be a white Christmas.

SKÖTSELRÅD-CYKLAMEN från Blomsterfrämjandet

Svenskt namn: Cyklamen ~ Latinskt namn: Cyclamen persicum.

Cyklamen vill ha en jämn tillförsel av vatten, ca 1/2 - 1 dl per dag. Mjukt vatten eller regnvatten är särskilt bra och allra bäst är om den får vattnet underifrån. Tillför en svag dos med näring en gång i veckan under hösten. Gör uppehåll under vintern och återuppta gödslingen i februari-mars.

Cyklamen ska stå ljust. Vid för varm placering kan växten bli lös. Den trivs utmärkt på svala platser samt inglasade balkonger och uterum. Växten klarar temperaturer ned mot 0°C.

Ta bort vissna blommor och blad med ett kraftigt ryck. Om det blir kvar en bit av stjälken längst ned vid knölen pressas växtsaft ut genom brottytan vilket ger en bra grogrund för sjukdomar.

My Melancoly November

Weather-wise, we have enjoyed a very mild start of November here, no temperatures below zero (C) and no storms! Very pleasant indeed, although rather foggy at times and that makes it melancholy. I rather like it, the silence and all the different shades of grey. The last rose of the growing season 2011 disrupt the pattern with it’s bright pink colour.

Red October - Rose Hips

Along the shores of the Baltic Sea I often find the lovely berries of the wild roses - the rose hips.
 At this time of the year it is especially nice to take a walk along the rocky shores and pick these nutritious berries. That is if the weather is nice. Today was one of those wonderful October days with high clear air, blue sky, a mild October sun and hardly any wind at all.

Last night was the first night with ground frost...fall is definitely here. 

I took a few hours  walk along the sea, looking and admiring Mother nature’s flora and fauna and listening to the waves from the Baltic Sea as the gently rolled in.  I made a stop at the very end of the small peninsula and just caught the moment. I had brought some hot cocoa in a thermos and that tasted just wonderful … it always does.

October flowers - DAHLIA

We have enjoyed a period of wonderful weather here where about I live, we call it Brittsommar and it is almost like your Indian summer, not as hot but still absolutely marvelous. The kitchen garden is still full of flowers - Nasturtiums, Pot Marigolds, Zinnias, Sweet Peas and Dahlias. The Dahlia on the picture is Bishop’s Children, a Dahlia I grow from seed. I planted them in April and now in October they are all “ in floribus”. I bought the seeds from US. SSE Seed Savers Exchange. The thing I really like with this Dahlia is the very dark foliage, isn’t it just fabulous

Without the shadows playing over the objects, the photos are dead. Shadows is just as important as the light in a picture. Its the cooperation between shadow and light that is absolutely essential for a good result. Its an art to be able to see when to catch the moment.

September in my Potager

I have the privilege to have both Vanessa and Echinacea in my September garden, two very beautiful and highly appreciated visitors. Nice combo, don't you think? I just love this time of the year in my potager. It is still warm and kind of quiet and calm, I have this melancholy feeling but… nevertheless it feels actually rather pleasant.

From dewy lanes at morning
The grapes' sweet odors rise;
At noon the roads all flutter
With yellow butterflies.

By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer's best of weather,
And autumn's best of cheer.

The golden-rod is yellow;
The corn is turning brown;
The trees in apple orchards
With fruit are bending down.

The gentian's bluest fringes
Are curling in the sun;
In dusty pods the milkweed
Its hidden silk has spun.

The sedges flaunt their harvest,
In every meadow nook;
And asters by the brook-side
Make asters in the brook,

But none of all this beauty
Which floods the earth and air
Is unto me the secret
Which makes September fair.

Rosa Alba 'Minette'

I just found some pictures of 'Minette' in my unsorted July files. I think this rose is so very pretty that I want so share it with you all, even if we now are in the August. It is one of my favorite roses this old faithful bush rose we have in the garden, full name Rosa alba 'Minette'.  It is very common in the gardens in Scandinavia, I wonder if it also is common worldwide?

'Minette' an old alba rose from  the beginning of 17th century, Minette is very hardy and long-lived. Double beautiful light-pink flowers, almost white, that darken in the centre. Minette has got this healthy foliage and the fragrant is wonderful. I can really recommend this alba rose.
