Tyra's Garden is a small garden on the island of Resarö situated in the inner part of the archipelago near the small town Vaxholm, outside Stockholm. Tyra's Garden is mostly an ornamental vegetable garden, my potager. But flowers are of course an important ingredience, for beauty and pollination. The climate in these parts is quite demanding as the northerly winds can be strong and cold. THIS BLOG 'Tyra's Garden' is not entirely a gardenblog it contains much more. Heirloom Patterns - Oriental Floral Décor

Heirloom Floral Patterns

Horticulture on the wall

This is a collage of framents of floral décor.

Details from एतमाद-उद-दौला का मक़बरा,

اعتماد الدولہ کا مقبرہ

The walls are white marble from Rajasthan encrusted with semi-precious stone decorations - cornelian, jasper, lapis lazuli, onyx, and topaz in floral images. More from my visit at Itmad- ud- Daula here

Heirloom patterns - a gift from the past

We have all heard about heirloom seeds and heirloom plant, as I was going through some pictures from India I thought these wonderful botanical patterns are true heirloom patterns – a gift from the past. These fragments of rugs and the wall decoration are from Jaipur and Amber* Fort Rajasthan they have this fantastic floral patterns from the past. The skill of for instance carpet weavers is a typical livelihood passed from one generation to another. The patterns, the art becomes heirloom.

My father, grandfather and uncle as a matter of fact all of the family as far back as I can remember, were carpet weavers before me. I entered the weaving industry at 10 years of age. These word were said by Arthur Mitchum a Brittish weaver b.1862

Horticulture on the floor

I think you can learn both some horticulture and anthropology by just looking and learning from decorations like these. Indoor Gardens on the floor.

This is a collage with fragments from rugs each one of them a wonderful garden.

The weaver girl at her loom

I have just learned that loom is a tool and it dates back to 4400 BC (horizontal loom)

The loom is what in this case the rug is woven on. It consists of a wooden framework with a grid of cotton threads. The cotton becomes the base the foundation of the rug. The “warp” is the cotton that runs vertically on the loom and the “weft” is the one that runs horizontally. The warp and weft together create a grid of cotton on which each strand of wool is tied around.

Underbart inlägg! Vilka konstverk, oftast skapade av flika kvinnohänder, det finns i världen!
Själv trånar jag efter en berbermatta - till golvet!

Good morning Tyra. You show some wonderful examples. I too admire the art of woven rugs and tapestries. As you say, an indoor garden on the floor or your home.

Stunning examples, Tyra! I have a passion for Oriental Rugs so this was a total delight and feast for the eye. Interesting note, on Wed we had a guest speaker/ presentation at our Garden Club discussing Art for Gardeners: Historical Perspective and Inspiration (e.g. the role of horticulture in works of art) ~ very interesting! Happy weekend :)

Kul med din annorlunda tolkning av blommande fredag!

It is always fascinating in an art gallery when you see a painting which features a garden somewhere in the background. Suddenly you get a glimpse of a style of gardening you have only read about - yet here, in the painting, it becomes a "real" living garden.

this is a wonderful series! just imagine the talent, the time and effort put into these works of art!... you're right about weaving as an heirloom --- a living gift from the past... i believe these artworks are more beautiful seen with one's own eyes :)

You always have something interesting going on over here Tyra! I love anything with a botanical/floral pattern so the rugs you featured are gorgeous to me. I collect dishes and painting and everything else floral too. It's like having a garden everywhere. Great post!

Hi Tyra, this was fascinating and beautiful! I love the girl weaving painting too, she is attired so romantically! We have several carpets with floral designs that belonged to my parents that are treasured here.

Tyra, While here enjoying your post, it occurs to me that I haven't many floral patterns in my house...I use plan white dishes. While the oriental rugs have a bit of flower they are more representational. Interesting. Gail

Oh, I'd love to have any one of those rugs, Tyra! Your collage is a work of art in an of itself, you did a wonderful job creating it! All of the information about looms, etc., is very interesting and informative;-)

Tyra!

mvh, Anja
