Tyra's Garden is a small garden on the island of Resarö situated in the inner part of the archipelago near the small town Vaxholm, outside Stockholm. Tyra's Garden is mostly an ornamental vegetable garden, my potager. But flowers are of course an important ingredience, for beauty and pollination. The climate in these parts is quite demanding as the northerly winds can be strong and cold. THIS BLOG 'Tyra's Garden' is not entirely a gardenblog it contains much more. Iris - Bombay Sapphire - Imekatigigta...say what?

This post 'Iris - Bombay Sapphire - Imekatigigta...say what?'was originally uploaded by Tyra Hallsénius-Lindhe in the blog
Tyras Trädgård/Tyra's Garden  -  ABC Wednesday and the letter is I

I is for IRIS

I got these wonderful photos from Hugh Stout Jr. at the Stout Gardens at Dancingtree
Hugh and Jennifer Stout have been growing, showing and hybridizing both daylilies and iris for over ten years. Hugh is both an exhibition/garden judge with the American Iris Society as  well as a garden judge for the American Hemerocallis Society. He is also past president of the Oklahoma Horticultural Society and Oklahoma Iris Society.

and at last to Bombay Sapphire...now why is it here among all the lovely Irises?

Well, I read this:

The Irises got these aromatic rhizomes...

"Rhizomes of the German Iris (I. germanica) and Sweet Iris (I. pallida) are traded as orris root and are used in perfume and medicine, though more common in ancient times than today. Today Iris essential oil (absolute) from flowers are sometimes used in aromatherapy as sedative medicines. The dried rhizomes are also given whole to babies to help in teething. Gin brands such as Bombay Sapphire use orris root and sometimes iris flowers for flavour and colour." wikipedia

Cheers! or

I  is for Imekatigigta...

this is how they say cheers in Greenland.

I'm amazed at the variety of iris. I posted a pure white one, but your white one with the tiger strips is outstanding.

Hej Tyra!
Wow, vilka enormt vackra Irisar du har!
Det var flera jag mer än gärna skulle önska till min trädgård :=)
Trevlig helg!

Hej Tyra!

Så underbara irisar! 'Bonjour' och 'Be may baby' fick jag riktigt sug efter. Jag gillar skäggiga irisar bäst, tycker de har lite extra karaktär.

Ha en fin vårkväll!
