Dahlia 'Harvest' - tubers and seeds

It's late September and the frost can come any night now, that means that I have to dig up all my Dahlia plants, it’s so sad that indicates that the summer has definitely ended and the autumn takes giant leaps towards the winter. Time to dig in!

On with the Wellington boots and ‘armed’ with a garden fork and my favourite secateurs I spend the whole day digging. Tough work…

I store my Dahlia tubers upside down in cardboard boxes with a little damp vermiculite, perlite or peat/moss to cover the clumps. Storage place, frost free (+7 C.) in the garage.

The seeds I just store in a dry place, sometimes I makes these rather pretty seed sachets with the names written with calligraphy. Then during the winter I can look through the seed box with all the sachets and dream of spring and summer again.

Dahlias and Kale a beautiful combination, perfect harmony.

Frost fritt (7 C.) i garaget.

Ha en riktigt fin höst dag - Have a nice day/

Du må gjerne komme å sitte i hagestolen min neste sommar :)

Tyra ... your 'piece of heaven' is always most inviting. You have a gift for sure, in word and outstanding photos, for sharing your treasures.

Yes, sadly it is good-bye to September Tyra...... the month of vivid colours, I always think of it as summer’s grand finale....... and as John Keats’ poem ‘To Autumn’ so beautifully describes...... it is the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness.

For many, autumn is their favourite time of year, for me not so, for it signals the onset of winter, which keeps me from my garden. Marion

No... my comment will not go through.... I'll have to go anonymous again sorry about that!

Hmmm maybe I should give this digging up a try, since you gave me some of your dahlias for my balcony.

Will try and get to it this weekend. Can I keep it in the basement or is it to warm do you think?

Lots of love
from your daughter

Hi Tyra, I love your garden, so productive with both flowers and food. Well done. We are able to leave the dahlias in the ground here, but lose some each winter. Maybe we should try digging them up. Your kale is wonderful. We have a caterpillar that makes lace of our kale plants, do you use something to protect yours, or do not have that insect problem?

Looking at all your lovely Dahlias I realised that i don't have any this year. Must buy some next year!

Marion, Veronica, Francis and Yolanda thank you for the lovely comments!
- Francis you asked about me about insects problem. I got one and that is the slugs, otherwise I have not got any problems and I think it's because I grow both flowers, herbs and vegetables. I mean the diversity is important.
