Leufstabruk Orangery and Mansion -
Leufstabruk Orangeri och Herrgård

When we meet Leufsta today she is dressed in December colours, it is cold and already dark despite it is just three o’clock when we walk through the baroque gardens of Leufstabruk. Last time I visited Leufsta it was September at the end of summer and it was still nice and warm. Very different yet she is still a beauty so calm and serene, a few hours in this place and your are relaxed. We have just visited the Christmas market in the 17th century Orangery, filled with Christmas goddies, knitted hats and mittens, hand made pottery and other handicrafts made of wood or iron. A lot of very nice things and I bought a pretty blueish green pitcher that will be nice to serve the 'glögg' molded wine in.
..

Orangery at Leufsta is from the 17th century and did survive the big ravages and huge fires by Russians in 1719. The floors in the Orangery are smooth, rustic and very beautiful, the stone walls are thick, I guess at least 70 cm thick and in the big room there are two enormous tiled stoves they must be 6 x 2 meters, huge and very impressive. I know that these tiled stoves are filled with sand and that is a great way to accumulate the heat, I wish that I could have one of those tiled stoves in my greenhouse.
...

There isn't very much to see in the gardens, I mean growing things but I like to look at the structures in a baroque gardens during the winter it is especially nice if there is snow of course. Although this time it wasn't the gardens we were here for, our goal was the Christmas market and a tour of the mansion at Leufstabruk. Leufsta was founded in 1596 by the way. It was a special Christmas tour 'Leufsta mansion at Christmas' how the life was here during the Christmas time. How the mansion was decorated, what they ate and how the Christmas traditions were back in the 17-18 and 19th century, most interesting and very beautiful.

That Orangeriet is gorgeous Tyra and it has tiled stoves as well? I love those stoves, I would like one in my livingroom. The house is beautiful as well, I love this kind of architecture.

It sounds like you had a great time there, enjoying the Christmas market and buying loads of stuff.

Glögg is great at this time of year when it's nippy outside.

I know what you mean about it not being light at 3 in the afternoon, there are some days when it really doesn't get light at all at this time of year.

Tara sends little doggie kisses!

Tyra, great post....Leufsta är en av mina favoriter, där finns en stor kakelugn från Marieberg som är ovanlig.
Roligt med någon fler som skriver om historiken.
Ha det gott,
Ia

What an impact all those images of a Christmas market is bringing up! I'd love to see some of that handmade pottery. I have to admit though that I have absolutely no idea what an Orangery is! I've got look that up.
BTW, regarding your request ... of course I'd love to help you out if I can. I'll check your post on friday and see. (A very helpful link to identify Indian plants : http://www.flowersofindia.net/ )
If there's anything else you need, let me know.

With all that snow, the photos have a magical quality about them. Very beautiful! And the Christmas market sounds like a buyer's dream.

It must be so interesting to see how the decorations/food were in those days. I'd love to see photos of the Christmas decor (then)---if it's possible. A bit of history is always good to know!

Thanks, dear Tyra, for sharing the beautiful tour of 'Leufsta mansion at Christmas'. Your photos are magical with snow and fog. And I'm with Kathryn, hoping you'll treat us to your glogg recipe, which I'm sure is better than mine.

I too love any sort of vase. I can use them for flowers, cooking untensils, or liquids. They are almost the best thing to have in the kitchen.

With no gardens to distract, you really can enjoy the structures. That's why I like winter as it prepares me for the active mindful days of flowering gardens.
