Dahlia Mignon in my Potager

This post 'Dahlia Mignon in my potager' was originally uploaded by Tyra in the blog Tyra's Garden

Blooming Friday September, the weather is still great and the air is warm. I love this time of the year, golden days and kind of 'Chillout time' in the garden, harvesting is the main work now and it is so joyful and rewarding.This Friday I want to show you a dear friend in my potager, Dahlia Mignon. Among all my vegetables and herbs I plant dahlias and especially this undemanding single flowering dahlia the Dahlia Mignon 'Firebird'.

~~~
Blommig fredag igen och den här veckan tänkte jag bjuda på en lite skönhet. Dahlia Mignon 'Firebird' en enkelblommande mycket lättskött dahlia som jag både har på friland i köksträdgården men även i krukor där de faktiskt trivs rikigt bra.
I love it and so does the beautiful butterflies as well.
.
I have written before and I say it again 'To combine flowers with vegatable is the Yin & Yang in my potager' I think it give me a healthy sustainable garden and it certainly adds beauty as well. Yin & Yang in Tyra's Garden 2007
Att kombinera blommor och grönsaker är både vackert för ögat och nyttigt för trädgården.
.. Dahlia Mignon among the Kale 'Nero di Toscana'
~~~

'Nero di Toscana' kallas även Svartkål och Palmkål och jag har den alltid med i min potager. Palmkålen är en form av grönkål och har avlånga krusiga blad och har en härligt mörkt svartgrön färgton.

It's is time to start gather the seed from this years flowers, are you a collector? As you know I'm a 'seedaholic' as a result of that my seedbank is getting a lot of deposits :-)

more cabbage...this time Brassica oleracea var. sabellica

~~~
Fler härliga bidrag till 'Blommig fredag' hittar du här hos Katarina
I wish you all a great and happy weekend in the garden.
Ha det gott mina vänner!
Hi Tyra
That is a lovely Dahlia and you certainly have a lot of luck with it. You grow it from seed? Interesting, I thought that all dahlias had tubers? You have a great week-end too in your garden.
Tyra your Potager is so beautiful and I so agree about planting flowers with veggies. Your dear friend is lovely... especially backlit by the sun and kissed by a butterfly. Exquisite portraits... always a joy to visit you! Carol
Hi girls!
Men Birgitta då hur kan man inte vara förtjust i detta släkte...hm tja men man säjer ju smaken är som baken.
Lene I do grow them from seed and tubers.
Carol that backlit photo is one of my favourit too. It is nice to see how a flower changes with the light.
Thank you for your comments/Tyra
Att blanda blommor och grönsaker var väl också något som utmärkte de viktorianska köksträdgårdarna en gång i tiden - en läcker kombination! Din lilla Dahlia är jättesöt och jag kan förstå att den lyser upp där bland bladgrönsakerna.
Trevlig blommig fredag!
God morgon Eva och Katarina, tack för era kommentarer, jo jag tror att det var så att de viktorianska köksträdgårdarna alla hade det och de är ju som en dröm för mej, tänk att få ha en 'walled garden' ack så underbart!
Ha det gott/ Tyra
Håller absolut med om att grönsakerna i köksträdgården ska ha sällskap av blomster - så hur kan vi ha missat att det är dahlior vi ska plantera där!!! Vi har hittills bara blandat med ettåringar, men nästa år åker det allt ner dahliaknölar här och var också - tusen tack för tipset!
Lillebeth said...
Visst, som sällskapsväxt är säkert dalian vacker. Riktigt fin färg och form.
Fin dahlia, speciellt på den bilden där solens strålar lyser igenom. Jodå, jag plockar frön också. Igår blev det ricin, rosenskära och stockros. :-)
Hi Tyra, you are such an inspiration! Not only the idea of dahlias with the veggies, both need that extra rich soil, but the saving of seeds from it as well. I will certainly put these two tips to work here! Thanks!!!
Dahlior återstår för mig att "utforska". Det finns ju så många vackra både former & färger.
Ha en skön helg!
Your Dahlias are beautiful. I especially like the last picture -- the red dahlia flowers look so lovely with the dark green cabbage leaves. Lovely!
Du gör alltid så genomarbetade och fina inlägg! Och visst är det vackert att blanda blommor och kål!!
Har aldrig tänkt på om Solbrud går att fröså, jag har köpt mina som färdiga plantor. Men det går förstås. Ska kolla senare i höst efter eventuella frön.
What a pretty dahlia and that butterfly is awesome. I am a bit of a seed collector but not real real big into it. It is surely that time of year and I'm sad to see another summer go.
Flowers and veggies... the best combination! One is food for the body, the other is food for the soul.
Your dahlias are such a happy cheerful colour, Tyra. Lovely!
Lovely dahlia. I also plant flowers in with my vegetables. I often collect seed but my preference is for the self seeding ones.
Din köksträdgård är underbar och svartkålen vet jag är helt ljuvlig, men hur undkommer du alla de miljoner små håriga fjärilslarver som invaderar dem hos mig när jag har prövat på att odla den? /Anja
Mmm!
Ja, den var fin den dahlian, Tyra, och det är ett läckert reportage du visar från din trädgård.
Vårt trädgårdsland, har väl legat lite nere denna sommaren, men där brukar också växa blandat med blommor och grönsaker, och vår ros "Salet" har sin givna plats där och trivs där...
Trevlig helg på dig, och kul att du tittat in hos mig!
Hi Tyra in Sweden! Isn't it awesome that we can communicate with people so far away from us? I'm just glad, but a bit embarrassed that so many can speak English, but even though I've taken some German and Spanish, I would not be able to speak them, let alone write them. I was, however able to communicate a little when I went to Mexico with a church group. I had learned a little, and used my translation book.
Anyway, I love your pottager and dahlias. They are so lush and full of blooms! I have some pink ones like your single kind in a wash tub that are just opening. The bees love them. I want to plant more in the ground next year. I hope you are enjoying your garden this weekend.
Vackert och Dahlior bjuder verkligen på en riktig höstglans.
Att plantera grönsaker och blommor har jag även prövat i sommar, Mangold med sina vackra röda stjälkar gjorde sig utmärkt i den purpurfärgade delen av rabatten.
Trevligt veckoslut! /bea
Hej!
Härliga foton av dalior. Själv har jag inget av dessa blommor.
Kanske dags att försöka med några. Namnet på blomman jag visade i blommig fredag var en "rödfibbla".
Tack för kommentaren hos mig.
Ha en bra helg!
I think flowers in a vegetable garden is a necessity. I love your dahlia, and I am reminded that mine has not bloomed this year. Puzzling.
Hi, Tyra! Lovely flower and ever so charming growing among the cabbages! I am so impressed with the butterfly photo! Do you know what kind of butterfly it is? Enjoy the last warm days, my dear. I know you will.
Så vackra bilder - särskilt den i motljus.
Jag är så där förtjust i dahlior, men den här är vacker! Just de enkla blommorna är oftast de vackraste, och den här är ett bra exempel på det.
TYRA Hallsénius Lindhe said...
Ha.. Hannele nej det är om man tar en brödbit och trycker på köttfärs (typ köttbullssmet)på den, sedan steker man den sakta i stekpannan på båda siderna. Man kan ha hackade rödbetor och/eller kapris i smeten också. Det finns väl lite olika varianter.
Det är riktigt gott.
ooh, what a magnificent dahlia ~ my favorite kind too ~ a collarette! I've read that bees prefer them to all the others so those are the ones I plant too. The coloring on yours is beautiful and you've taken so many wonderful photos of it. I am right there with you on enjoying the last warm days of summer. I hope they take their time leaving...
Härligt och du har fått en pärlemofjäril på dalian, MB
Lovely dahlias Tyra! I had single-blooming dahlias in containers last year as an experiment to see how they'd bloom in part sun. I was pleased with their performance, but forgot to get more this year. I prefer the simple beauty of the single dahlias over some of the 'fancier' varieties.
It's good to know the seeds can be saved. I've become more interested in saving seeds and starting more plants than just the veggies from seeds. It's fun growing plants from seeds, and much more economical as well.
Åh, my kind of flower! Den ser verkligen ut som en blomma-blomma, en sån man ritar :) Jag ser fram emot att kratta grus på vägen som leder till det lilla paradiset. Kram mousch!
