Paph and a Rare Book - It's Blooooming Friday!

Apart from my own family I have another family that gives me great joy and happiness through the long winter months and they are the Orchid family Orchidaceae. Here is one of the members, let me introduce Paphiopedilum, I call ‘her’ Paph for short. Paph is a stunning and mysterious looking beauty but ‘she’ is not as long lasting as ‘her’ relative Phal….that is Phalaenopsis that you have already met here
...

The paphiopedilums (genus Paphiopedilum) – often abbreviated Paph and colloquially known as paphs in horticulture – are flowering plants in the orchid family (Orchidaceae). It contains about 80 accepted species nowadays, some of which are natural hybrids. These slipper orchids are native to South China, India, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, and form their own subtribe, the Paphiopedilinae. Text: wikipedia Paphiopedilum

...A Lovely Looking Rare Book of Orchids.

Karl Ludwig von Blume 1796 - 1862

I just love the cover on this book and when I read more about it I found out that is very valuable as a matter of fact it is worth a fortune! Perhaps you got it in your attic...

Written by K.L von Blume 190 pages, 66 hand made steel engraved/litho plates 55 fully hand water coloured plates. I have seen a few of them and they are wonderful I just adore hand coloured lithographs.

Karl Ludwig von Blume was born 1796 in Braunschweig in Germany and spent most of his professional life working in the Netherlands, where he worked in the state herbarium, Rijksherbarium, Leiden.

I wish you all to have a great weekend - TYRA

I knew I was going to love this post, dear Tyra! I would love to tenderly hold that beautiful book in hand. My walls are filled with hand coloured lithographs, many of orchids. I'm keeping my eye on my dear 'Paph', praying it will rebloom ... wishing ... and hoping ... and praying.

Tyra

mvh, Anja

I was going to say the same thing Tina did ~ I WISH I had that book in my attic too! But I don't think I could sell it! At least not right now. It would be too much of a treasure. Your slipper orchid is gorgeous. My "bargain" orchid has two buds on it and had more before my cat chewed the end off. Oh my goodness, if I didn't love him so much, it would all be over for him!! Have a good weekend too Tyra.

Good morning mama!

Have to tell you. At the moment I'm sitting at the breakfast table with my weetabix and the computer, its dark outside and a huge golden orange moon is setting just by the Kista tower. Its as Rina would say, amaaazing.

Have a lovely friday. Absolutely loving this short week.

Take care!

it's nice to have a companion like your paph for winter... the flower looks really interesting... and with the thumb-shaped "pouch" i think it resembles a venus flytrap...

and that's a very, very nice book... the lithographs must be wonderful to look at...

have a nice weekend, too...

I am absolutely crazy about orchids. Sadly none of them grow where I live, and that has only compounded my fascination for them very acutely.
Anyway, some of my obsession does get addressed to by having the vicarious pleasure of enjoying them on the blog land. Thank you dear Tyra those photographs are amazing.

Hi Tyra, the paphs are my weakness with the orchidmania! The one you feature is a beauty too. I love that they bloom during the winter here in the greenhouse so that I can better appreciate their delicate beauty. In the cool temps of the greenhouse now, they blooms last very long, longer than the phals even. That book is a beauty, I wish it was in my attic! HA
