Zinnia elegans 'Landreth's Oriole' & Co

Blooming Friday again and the last in the month of March. Outside it is still depressingly cold and still some white stuff on the ground. Blaaa. Indoors however my plants, the small seedlings thrives on the veranda.

Zinnia elegans ’Landreth’s Oriole' is a wonderful heirloom from 18th century. Beautiful orange flowers quite large, double and it reminds me a little of the Dahlia’s flower. I grow all my Zinnias from seed and I start out as early as March. This Zinnia got its name from D. Landreth and this Landreth fellow was quiet a man I will get back to him in another post.

~~~
Zinnia elegans ’Landreths Oriole’ en Kulturarvssort från 1700-talet. Vackert orangegula, stora, dubbla blommor, påminner like om en Dahlia tycker jag. Jag odladen i rabatt och frösår den redan i mars månad. Mannen bakom namnet 'Landreth Oriole' är D. Landreth och honom kommer jag återkomma till i ett annat inlägg.
These are the Zinnias I have planted in Tyras Garden 2009
....
...
The Zinnia Whirligig fun, Whirligig I had to look up that word I thought they misspellt it, anyway 'Whirligig fun' will be about 50 cm tall (20 inches), the 'Tropical sun' is a dwarf zinnia will be just 25 cm (10 inches) , the last two 'Old Scabiosa' and 'Landreth's Oriole will be about 70 cm tall (28 inches). I generally prefer the really tall ones as I plant them among all my veggies. The seeds are from Impecta, they have an impressive collection of Zinnias this year and a lot of them are heirlooms.
Vilken färgprakt. Dina inlägg är alltid så intressanta. Zinnia elegans gör mig nyfiken. Jag har en nyanlagd rabatt där färgskalan är gult-orange. Jag har haft svårt att hitta perenner, som är orange. Får kolla in den eleganta Zinnian istället. Tack för tipset!
Önskar dig också en skön och varmare helg.
Zinnias are one of my favorites Tyra. Have I told you lately how much I love your photoshopping skills? The top photo is so great with the superimposed bloom over the seedlings. Just beautiful!! You rock girl!
PS I totally forgot to tell you that your 2009 choices look great. I bought two different zinnia seed packets but now I'm going to go look them up and see what they are....
I hope the white stuff melts soon. We just got 13 more inches today. ugh.
I have a variety of Zinnias that I will be direct sowing into the garden next month. They really attract the butterflies every summer. Last summer I forgot to plant any, stupid me! :)
I love your choice of zinnias. I will have to look for ’Landreth’s Oriole'. I like having heirloom plants in the garden and that looks like a good one!
My grandfather introduced me to Zinnias...they were his favorite :)
Så fint du kommer få det bland dina zinnior, Tyra! Min mamma berättade att Zinnia var min mormors favoritblomma - och ännu har jag inte odlat några. Det borde jag nog ändra på...
Trevlig helg!
Zinnia kan man inte vara utan, det har du alldeles rätt i!! De är lite stela i stjälkarna, men i rätt sammanhang är de - nästan som en Marabou med Yvonne Lombard - Mmmmmm. (Det här sista begriper nog ingen annan än de som gick på bio på 60-talet, men det är ju mycket här i världen man inte begriper ;-))
I do not grow many annuals but Zinnia is one of them. Always loved them especially grow the tiny yellow and white ones. This summer I have grown some fancy ones and they have surprisingly done well. Generally it is to humid and wet in summer. I guess they grow wonderfully well in summer in Sweden. You are very diligent to grow them yourself from seed. Do yours also seed themselves over summer? I like the old fashioned ones you have posted.
(BTW your raindance was a big hit we had a lovely, wet summer!Thank you)
Zinnia har faktiskt jag köpt hem också och ska så kanske idag. Var det förresten du som var med i senaste numret av Allt om trädgård?
Hard to believe that when it is gradually heating up here in India, things are depressingly cold at your place! Hope the weather improves for you.
Zinnias add a great deal to the look of my garden. Till now, for me, they were only 'Zinnias', but after reading your post, I will have to see which further sub-species they belong to.
Her spirer det fint :)
God helg :)
We have whirligigs here in NC. My grandfather use to make them.
I grew the green Envy zinnias last year and loved them. Your seedlings look perfect and that black dirt is beautiful.
Helen jag har skickat skott till dej, hoppas ni bara de klarar kylan. Du får väl höra av dej om de har frusit ihjäl.
Maria jo då det var jag som var med både i AoT och Allers, det slumpade sig bara så att reportagen kom samtidigt.
Ha en riktigt fin helg och hoppas att solen värmer er alla.
Tyra! Zinnorna ser jättefina ut och i din trädgård gör de sig jättefint!
Så trevligt att möta dig lite här och var - nu senast i AoT!
Vet inte om du läste om min undran i din blogg vid ett tidigare tillfälle där jag frågade om dina växthusfläktar i taket?
Själv är jag på jakt efter liknande och skulle gärna vilja vetea mer om dina - om det går för sig.
